Unfortunately, you're probably right. I was mainly trying to point out that it's not a binary choice.

I agree, it's not for all. I think the preference comes down to the weightings individuals assign to: the importance of propagating their values vs their genes; and the value of existing humans vs potential humans.

I'd argue that there's a third option: adoption. There are children who have already been born, and are subject to the burden of existence. Instead of creating new humans with the potential to suffer, help support and nurture thos

Here's a video on an early HP calculator watch. While not on computer watches, it has a nice introduction on the early history of calculator watches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGQrsSEaZkI

"Sarah, put on the green coat or the red sweater. We're going to go out, okay?" Choice among humans increases the likelihood of compliance. And choice isn't important, it's the appearance of choice that's impo

Having checking archive.org it seems not to have changed. NASA's main site from 1997 also has a nice interface: https://web.archive.org/web/19970711085416/http://www.nasa.g...

My brain initially misread that as 8086. I started to wonder if people might have an aversion to using processor model numbers due to their familiarity... but apparently not.

I was also confused. Personally, I find the use of tau nonsensical -- especially when it's used alongside pi. Established conventions should only be changed when there's a clear need to do so. Inventing a redundant constant does l

I suspect it selects for a very particular type of person -- someone who values the opportunity to work for google more than their own time; and consequently results in employees who are eager and willing to put the company before themselve

The same could be said for any industry. Anyone can practise carpentry, but if someone is going to do so professionally and build structures that can cause injury or damage if they fail, then they should be accountable for the consequences.

20 under 20 should be countered by someone funding 50 over 50. Disrupt the SV age bias by taking 50 experienced professionals, and giving them the freedom and resources to do whatever they like.

This is what happens for me even with shorter lists. Or, I try to ease myself into working by starting with a list, but start feeling overwhelmed as the list grows longer. When this happens, I more often than not end up procrastinating. It

As others have said below, issues that have little to do with parallelisation can heavily influence performance, e.g. caching and I/O. Referring to the list on wikipedia again, compare two different 4-core CPUs: Intel Core i5-2500K 4-c

The shortcoming of clock frequency as a performance measure is illustrated by comparing Instructions per Second (MIPS) [1]. e.g. ARM Cortex A7: 2,850 MIPS at 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Krait (Cortex A15-like, 2-core): 9,900 MIPS at 1.5 GHz Both proce

I partially agree with you, but sentience isn't the same as intelligence. From having had dogs I get the impression that most of them are every bit as sentient as I am. There's also a large amount of speciesism involved in how we
