As I'm going to spend many hours every day on a computer, I sure want an aesthetic and ergonomic setup. I don't really consider buying tools I like a fashion statement.

Ordering an expensive watch straight from a known master is one option, they usually don't spend a lot of money on managers, dealers or even advertising. For 20k you've got plenty options. The only downside is that selling your ge

This. IMO Knuth's writing is also a pleasure to read. Some concepts are hard and sometimes I just have to skip some math derivations but overall it's certainly not a dry technical reference (even though it can be used as one).

Indeed, Sandy Bridge i7-2600 is still more than enough for me (no gaming but crunching numbers frequently).

Wikipedia states that the extinction happened only 13000 years ago. Fascinating stuff. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panthera_spelaea

You probably don't hate Latex typesetting. It's just that the kind of default styles that people, especially beginners, tend to use that often look archaic. Latex doesn't make creating your own unique styles too easy though,

Context would be a convenient tool for the job. You can create pdf, xml, and epub from the same source. You get the power of Tex but producing modern looking stuff is IMO much easier than with Latex. I personally usually use Latex for short

As the author continues, it becomes mildly weird only when you realize that you can write b[a] and it just works (tm). I've seen students saying the compiler somehow checks that the "a" is arrayish so the swapped version does

Many countries in Europe, for example, have already destroyed majority of their forests. Not saying that destroying forests is good, quite the opposite, but unfortunately that's how it seems to go if you can't monetize the forests

I'm curious which language/approach did you take. I recently picked Idris with the book Type-driven development in Idris and so far I'm enjoying the ride (I have some experience in functional programming but not in Haskell).

This. Academics who have already "proved themselves" should seriously consider dropping Elsevier et al. If your career depends on publishing in certain journals there is less freedom to do the "right" thing.

The first chapter of SICP also has a similar (but not identical) O(log(n)) algorithm in the excercises. Fun stuff.

Not OP, but for me it helped to understand what is actually happening. Definitely recommended. Nowadays I use mostly Context (mainly because fonts and creating your own layout is made easy), and never plain Tex, but still I think reading t

Homeschooling is great, with or without vaccinations. Personally I prefer spreading actual knowledge about vaccines and their advantages (and possible side-effects, too) to calling skeptical people dumb and trying to make them hate "th

Mapping Capslock simultaneously to both ESC and Control solved this problem for me. It might not be your piece of cake but it definitely improved my vim experience greatly. See for example (I'm not the author) https://www.da

Decent managing of oil resources defnitely played a role there. Also, Norway is a small and still pretty homogenous country. They probably feel at least in some level that they are in the same boat together, something that is hard to achiev
