I don't know. One does have to spend one's time doing something. There is a natural limit to how LITTLE I'd like to work, technology improvements notwithstanding. If I only "had to" work 1 day a month, I can't imagine being competent at any

It's a valid point, though. "So, it's your first Rails app, eh? Do you know Ruby? No? Do you know HAML and SCSS and Coffeescript? No? OK, step 1 in this new framework that you know nothing about is to figure out how to change the defaults."

I think the "surplus effect" here would also be nice. If he was willing to accept $55k and you say, "tell you what, let's make that $75k because we really like you," you're going to get a very happy employee, because he perceives that you j

So, Nginx is supposedly more resource-efficient and easier to configure than Apache. But I assume Apache still has advantages or abilities that Nginx doesn't have. When would you still pick Apache? I'd love to see answers here: http://serv

Problem is, you can't put the genie back in the bottle. If they cripple Hulu because its popularity is threatening traditional TV, people aren't going to forget that it existed. They like watching via the web. The question is whether the

I thought that was called "Agile Development." What's unprofessional about it? I'd say it's a lot more professional than letting your browser stagnate for years, leaving security holes unpatched, etc. As for "how browser development should

True, but MS will always try to steer people toward their own services, so it's not a complete win. But definitely better than having people on IE6 trying to use Gmail, or even search for that matter.

Speaking as a complete non-expert who has just listened to some economic podcasts about health care, there's not a reason they charge $6 for Tylenol. There's more like 100 intertwined reasons. Healthcare economics is a nightmare of comp

On our Ubuntu server, I can create both foo.txt and Foo.txt in a folder. On my OSX machine, those are considered the same file. Three reasons that's no big deal: 1) We never create both foo.txt and Foo.txt. Why would we? (OK, that's a bit s

Yes, a LinkedIn shirt would be lame, because everyone uses that service, and (in my perception) people who talk about leveraging synergy were on it before geeks were. So it's neither a cool group nor an exclusive one. Whereas a Github t-shi
