I've made almost a million dollars in 2 years as an indie developer. I also know many others as successful as myself or more so they are definitely out there. A top grossing iOS app makes 500k per DAY, so there are definitely a lot of succe

if you count IAP, it's probably double that, just based on my own experience with paid apps and IAP.

that's the global list, but the per category list that OP was talking about is on iTunes desktop only. So pretty much worthless.

Best of luck. I quit my job a year and a half ago to work on my app business full time. I'm now making 6 times my salary from app profits. In my situation, my app profits were already surpassing my income by the time I quit. I'm not sure wh

The What's Hot list is useless since it's not on the device. It's likely algorithmic as well. The only list that matters is the curated featured list on the device.

it's for the risk averse because you can bootstrap and keep your job. it's for the lazy because your limited time forces you to attack much smaller problems and make compromises, which im my opinion is a GOOD thing.

I haven't spent any money and barely any time on marketing. Development I did all the coding myself and eventually hired a graphic designer part time. The thing is I'm not usually on the Top 100 list (or even Top 300 for that matter), I jus

I'm a big fan of bootstrapping, allow me to add my own data point. I was the typical bored-at-BigCo guy but was afraid to completely jump into startups full time (I have a family). I decided to bootstrap my startup (mobile app) at the begin

I have a similar experience. I actually traveled the world for 7 months last year working on my startup. It was exciting at first, but then the excitement became routine and I longed to get back to my SF home office.

As a data point I have about 900,000 customers to service (iPhone apps). I've also had times in my career where I have had one customer (department of defense). I'm much happier with the 900,000. I think an assumption Jason makes that i wou
