I don't think so. UK and US have equivalent unemployment rates but vastly different welfare systems. Germany is more generous than the UK but has lower unemployment. Southern Europe has higher unemployment, but welfare typically less g

But Pearls book explicitly argues for using correlational evidence to infer causation. The trick is to actually have a causal model and design observational studies that rule out as many alternative explanations as possible.

We only have correlation for lots of important results. Smoking cigarettes is one example. Experiments are almost always better, and a lot of correlational research is terrible. But knowing something for sure doesn’t always require an expe

If you think setting this up is simple you have no idea how big corporations make decisions like this. Even if the actual website setup was simple, many people will have been involved and the 'marketing cost' has to account for th

Ollama is great. I actually wish they would wrap OpenAI and Azure and generally act as as a proxy for third party APIs. Having a consistent, well thought out API which isn't tied to a single provider would be really good for the commun

I think your comment is rude, and naive in that it misses the point. The investment here is small relative the the marketing budget, which tells us something about their priorities.

It’s so niche that it regularly wins the popular vote in the US despite massive voter suppression. The only reason the god n guns lobby wins in the US is 1. the constitutional settlement which massively overweights rural voters and 2. corpo

In my case, I have to make a conscious effort to remain consistently (in)tolerant of lazy writing. It’s hard to keep on reading between the lines and giving the benefit of the doubt.

I actually pitched this idea as a project for students on an MSc EE course a friend runs. Sadly none of the students picked it but we looked at it in some detail and it’s so simple that even the dev boards +battery + mic array could have be

I really wish someone would make a pendant like this which is focussed on local-only use. It could connect to a mobile app or computer for transcription and summarisation, but using local models or an API key that the use chooses. I would p

Facebook already knows how old its users are with a great degree of accuracy. The block does not have to be perfect to be effective at a societal level. Some curious kids may circumvent it. But it would prevent the massive network effect wh

Why polarise things even more like this? I agree with you (in partperhaps) and think it’s often fine to like 70s and 80s films for what they are without ignoring the fact that values and mores have changed. 1970s attitudes to women at work

Why not point to actual flaws in the methodology then? It’s a really interesting a very hard to run piece of research. Inevitably it will be flawed because tight real world experiments in economics are hard/impossible.
