What he actually said: http://www.cnet.com/news/gates-buffett-a-bit-bearish/ Gates shed some light on his own hard-nosed business philosophy. "Although about 3 million computers get sold every year in China,

Yes, going from a tape drive to the good ole 1541 was like night and day. Incredibly reliable device. I can't say the same thing for C=64 power supplies though.

LA had an excellent bus system. I've been riding it almost every day for 7 years now. Also, the author already said he had a 20 minute commute, but didn't say to where.

The main problem I see that led to this situation is the author picking one of the most expensive places in LA to live, Venice Beach. The author could have chosen a much less expensive (but less glamorous) area, say in Koreatown or somewher

So much armchair quarterbacking in this thread. As a long time LA resident, these signs are a huge improvement over the current system of just adding multiple signs on the same pole. Many times I have to spend 5 minutes calculating whether

I'd recommend watching "Alone on the Wall" posted here if you want some sweaty palms: https://youtu.be/YjMVlGx7g84 Alex's skill seems beyond human. I hope he's with us for a long, long time.

As someone who is responsible for 10-15 concurrent IT projects across numerous teams, many of whom I don't manage, this sounds terrible. I think the "no PMO' approach may work for homogenous groups whose focus is one project,

I suppose the difference that I see here is that Microsoft is making phones and tablets, as opposed to patent trolls that don't even plan on leveraging the patents they own. But yes, I agree that that probably most of these patents sho

I know it's pretty popular to bash Microsoft and patent trolls, but could this possibly be a valid and licensed use of patented technology?

I'm seeing this change in the workplace as well. I work in a large IT shop and have about 15-20 meetings a week with different departments. Until the past 6 months, everyone was sporting iPads with some sort of bluetooth keyboard case.

Yep. I work at a hospital so switching to Linux would impact 100% of our applications. I understand the desire (especially on HN) to switch to Linux, but it's just not a plausible solution for most institutions. It sounds great in theo

I could just imagine that conversation with my CTO... Me: CTO, we're switching to Linux instead of Windows 7 CTO: Great! How much functionality will we lose with our applications? Me: All of it! CTO: Let's do it!
