Wow! I'm glad I came back into this thread -- these are all such great tips. Especially the advisory group (item 2)

"fair wage" was a poor choice of words on my part. I didn't mean to imply that your payment was "unfair", but rather that minimum wage is to low (imo) for an advanced programming book.

Thank you for the details! Much appreciated. Even though you may not have been paid a "fair wage" for the work that you put into this book, it sounds like you are very happy with the outcome and the experience and the future benefits that y

So, is this the full version of the O'Reilly book [1] or something different? I'm curious about the business end of this project: did you sell this PDF before giving it away for free? How much revenue have you brought in? How much time have

I've always been a fan of Seneca, the Roman philosopher and Stoic. Here's a great collection of quotes: http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Seneca

How about a simple voting mechanism which will display more popular quotes more frequently?

Thanks for this. I'm a big Derren Brown fan and can't view YouTube due to proxy restrictions. I know exactly which clip this is thanks to your summary.

I'm not sure about Basecamp Alternatives created by HN / YC members but I've used ActiveCollab, which is self-hosted and very nice. Zoho has a great offering, too. Here's a fairly comprehensive list, but I'm not sure how old it is. http://

Yeah, that's kinda the point. HN stops being the place that people come to for fluffy/inflammatory stories as we've seen for the past few days.

We just need 24 hours of pure <insert obscure, fringe technology here> stories. I think we've used Erlang in the past (no offense to the Erlangers, obviously)

I'd love some more details: 1. How did you come up with this as a topic for an eBook? 2. Is this your area of expertise, or did you see a niche market? 3. What are some specifics on your AdWords campaign? 4. Looks like you have a strong onl

Not if you just save the JS file to your local machine, right? There's no HTTP involved in that case (which is precisely how I intended to use it).

Wow! I've actually been trying to come up with a secure, but easy-for-me-to-remember password scheme. What I wanted to build was a password generator which takes a username and domain as inputs and spits out an pseudo-random passsword. Some
