SSD volumetric capacity already exceeds spinning disk, and we're just waiting for the price to come down. The horse's dealer's competition wasn't more stables, it was the car.

For any HN'ers in the bay area, if you're into this stuff you should pay a visit to the Hiller Aviation museum. It's right by EA on the San Carlos Airport. Hiller was a pioneer in helicopter design, and they have a ramjet tip

Sweet. I'll monitor this an order a non-gpu version when it comes out. Most of my stuff just needs a serial console.

Yes, but the effect is magnified if they're in your country. You would collect local taxes, and the majority of money spent would circulate inside the economy, rather leaving.

I feel this deserves an answer from the guy who made the comment. First, I'm nationalistic. I want my home to be the best possible place it can be. There is an undeniable benefit to the economy, culture, general education level, abili

Yeah, I've done some python daemons in win, and registered with the service control manager, but I was wondering what the "magic" was there.

So how does this work in windows? Edit, as for some reason it's getting downvoted: In windows, do you have to do the double fork etc? Do you have to close FDs etc?

$5 says this is stuck in some bureaucratic sinkhole somewhere. Barring a _good_ reason, I'd much rather have Daniel's brain here in the US than anywhere else.

Very very high. What fuels a thunderstorm is large amounts of air rising, and falling very rapidly. When the aircraft encounters those air movements it can very quickly exceed the structural limits of the aircraft.

I'll have to go searching (been 13 years), but conceptually building a tornado encoder is a multi stage pipeline with input blocks and output blocks depending on how the bipart graph is set up. Once you have that you extend the bittore

Take a look at tornado codes if you want a rated (instead of rateless) erasure code. It's related to fountain codes (and linked on the wikipedia article), and does basically the same thing as Reed-Solomon but with quasi linear encoding

Yeah, but that's like 12 pages of text. 12 pages is a trivial amount to read for a step by step guide on how to own millions of machines.

A few things I like to keep in mind about soviet spies of this era, especially in regard to nukes. 1) The USSR was the UKs and the USs ally in WWII, and all the propaganda was saying as such. 2) It would not be a stretch to think that havin

I hit this myself all the time with my product. I think the core problem is that we're too close. We know all the little things it can do, so it's hard to pull back and see what the BIG things really look like.

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this, but if I have multiple vendors, why can't I compare the hashes of all of them before I ask for the binary? Then any one vendor is being held to account by the others before I install. N

Is stat really something you want as an abstraction over all filesystems? You might not even have that information available in all of them.

If you compute storage cost vs content creation rate, you would expect that not much would get saved.

Nice. I have an old Cordata 8088 around somewhere at my parents house. I'll have to boot it up and see if I can get a network card for it.

I always considered custom ringtone stores a gross abuse of the customer. MIDI existed YEARS earlier, so did MP3 and MOD. There's absolutely no reason why I shouldn't have been able to load my own on the phone and just play it. So

Absolutely that's tech. Metallurgy, force maps, 3d models, computer controlled machining, etc is in fact HIGH technology. To previous generations that's just plain magic, even if the user doesn't spend more than 1/10th o
