Use TADS [0], if you like programming, or Inform [1], if you do not. Alternatively, for web only, you could try Undum [2]. [0] http://inform7.com/ [1] http://www.tads.org/ [2] http://undum.com/

I like fixing bugs. I hate that you have to replicate them beforehand. That's usually digging out certain versions of the environment setup. The actually theory-validation-cycle of bug fixing is fun, because it is just like science.

In my field (compilers), i'm often dumbfounded what garbage gets published. I do not even want to see the stuff that was rejected.

You have to look for personal or institute pages. For example, one of my papers is behind the ACM paywall [0], but you can also get the pdf at our institute website [1], where we publish everything [2]. As a last resort, mail to the authors

The thesis of the author is: There is at least one problem, which can be done better with a ConcurrentHashMap than with Actors. I do not see, why you cannot replicate the ConcurrentHashMap behavior in Erlang? > Now, you could do some cl

The last paragraph mentions a single bus (instead of tiles), so they can use a bus sniffing cache coherence protocol (MOESI etc). No problem here. As far as i know, the frontier is at 60-80 cores, where bus sniffing gets too expensive. Howe

A blog can easily be structured by categories or something and still stay a "blog". One big question is, what happens with information, when it gets out of date? For example, you write a blog post "Scala is the greatest language ever" and a

That is more of a fundamental problem of synchronization than about GUIs. Locks are anti-modular. So one solution could be to abandon locks, which is hardly a fresh insight. An event queue just makes the queue the one and only synchronizat

To be realistic: The frontend is not verified. Only very few optimizations are done. It only seems to have a PPC backend. However, i still think verified compilers are the future. It will just take two or three decades until we see them at

The frontend is not verified. This part parses, checks and lowers C code to a Clight. There is no formal specification of C itself and that would be the first step to verify the frontend.

Our cparser compiler cannot even try to compile Linux, because it does not support the gcc -regparm and the -softfloat arguments. These are features that do not matter for applications (on x86). -regparm changes the calling convention, so t

The most interesting observation from my point of view is that the author sped up PyPy with a simple manual optimization. This means that PyPy still has even more potential for optimization.

Doesn't that lead to a lot of overhead? If i have a hundred friends and i broadcast a message, then the message must be encrypted a hundred times with each friend's public key.

I wonder about the causation here. Maybe short words get used more often, such that their meaning is diluted and the information contained decreases. An interesting (counter?) example is "use" vs "usage" vs "utilization".

Guess what, syntax sometimes actually helps readability. For example Python's "something[2:-2]" to remove the first and last to elements of a list or maybe characters of a string. Lisp is the language, where you have to write the AST yourse

Around 5% of the instructions in a C program are register reordering code introduced by the register allocator (assuming x86 and an optimizing compiler). I do not know the percentage of the register spilling code, which comes on top of this

Summary: Some Gnome devs would like to require systemd. Unfortunately, systemd is currently not ported to anything but Linux, so this would make Gnome Linux-only. However, porting systemd to Solaris and BSD does not look hard.

AntLR can do this, although it does not work that well. I used the C backend, which is pretty directly ported from the Java backend. C-in-Java-style is pretty awkward.
