I also have written my own tar parser, in https://github.com/bestouff/genext2fs - oh boy it's not easy ! My parser is of course incomplete and won't handle corner cases, which are really plenty. In the end I

I see "unsafe" more like "this is code that the compiler can't prove it holds its invariants, but in fact it does and I hope the programmer added a comment to explain why".

On Android it's very constrained. Background apps are quickly killed to save battery, whereas on my N900 any running app which wouldn't stop by itself would drain it in a few minutes.

Nice, but I still prefer Rust's match syntax. It feels natural and ergonomic.

Whereas using Yocto is a long process of learning how it works to make your first build, and then learning again when you want to update some dependencies.

I prefer FSM implemented in Rust. Having valid transitions checked at compile time is a life saver as soon as is gets a bit complex - at least in my case being able to "prove" an embedded system wouldn't trigger its watchdog

At last ! Glad to see this incoming. Now if it could work also for LineageOS phones, that would be perfect.

Also French already has words that are written the same (homographs) but do not sound the same (not homophons), i.e.: il est content (= he's happy) ils content (= they are telling a story) ... so one less accent doesn't hurt that

Well, I have a problem that if I'm not motivated I tend to procrastinate, a lot. Exciting tech enables some kind of "berzerk mode" in me where I work frantically, i.e. like a normal coder. So I tend to choose exciting tech wh

How do you do that ? I didn't know you could compile a kernel directly to an UEFI payload. Edit: Indeed it's possible with CONFIG_EFI_STUB=y : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/EFISTUB - thanks for the hin

I wrote an incomplete tar parser (genext2fs author here) because I also thought tar was easy. Believe me nothing could be more wrong. That old underspecified file format is full of weird addons by different implementations, bug workarounds,

Maybe I'm unlucky, but any company I worked in has that legacy codebase which kind-of works, has bugs, and that nobody wants to refactor - and I don't blame them, refactoring code which had years of debugging is not always a good

Rust shines when doing error handling. No way to ignore errors, but properly handling them often adds just a single question mark to your code. Everything stays readable and lightweight. Of course the error handling story is still perfectib

Yes there's a fixed cost because of the std library, panics unwinding code (i.e. clean recovery instead of aborting when something goes wrong), and the tendency to statically compile everything in adds some more, but in embedded contex
