Netscape was a buggy piece of software back then, and when IE 4 and IE5 came out they were a breath of fresh air for the general user. This was mostly back in the 28.8 and 56.6k modem days, and Netscape's caching of content was a joke:

What?! Of course it does in real life - unless you're working on very small amounts of data, cache level latencies (where Intel chips - non-atom at any rate - generally have much lower latencies) and cache pre-fetchers and branch predi

Memory / Cache subsystems are generally where ARM chips fall down (in terms of throughput), and Intel has several patents on cache hierarchies that AMD is licensed to use. So it's technically possible that AMD could build ARM chip

Most VFX for Film (at least by the big studios like ILM, Weta, SPI, MPC, Framestore) is done on Linux. Even Pixar are mostly Linux-based.

It wouldn't be that difficult to re-write the main 3D Game engine using OpenGL. If you had the assets (textures, models) in modern formats, one person could probably do it in a couple of weeks. Using another game engine would be quic

Possibly, as Intel's compiler uses dynamic code-path selection based on the processor. But more likely, it would mean slower code execution, as the code path wouldn't be optimised for AMD: i.e. if the processor check thinks it

There are several benchmarks out there showing that the Intel compiler can give a boost for AMD chips over MS VC++ and MingG++ on Windows. They should have originally used supported flags for different features instead of blacklisting the n

It's all about workflow. and it's what free/open source software gets wrong almost all the time (and I say that as an advocate of it), due to the fact devs rarely listen to users. The features are often there but they'

But the python source code's available to build, and anyway, quite a bit of the python in VFX is run through embedded interpreters in Maya, Nuke, Houdini or Katana which means they can keep using an old version indefinitely.

exactly. Maya 2012, Nuke 7 are on 2.6.4/5 Maya 2014, Nuke 8 are on 2.7.3. It's a chicken and egg situation - until VFX houses (often with close to a million lines of Python code integrating stuff) need Python 3 (I don't see w

Blender's hardly used in high-end VFX production, due to scalability and interface issues... Houdini's got dual 2/3 support though.

Yeah, but that's quite likely (without some sort of façade layer) going to be double the work adding new functionality, and it's definitely going to be twice the testing of the entire Python functionality of the apps.

What's also missing here is differentiating between "dependencies" as other python libs or host apps with built-in python interpreters stuck to a particular version. For example, VFX studios are generally stuck on 2.6.4 as th

It's confusing, because 4k has been used as a term (not actually that often in practice) in the VFX industry for 5/6 years for the following resolutions: 4096 × 2160 (standard) 4096 x 3112 (super 35) Then for 4k cameras, the follo

Working in the VFX industry, I'm well aware of what a production renderer needs :) I wouldn't say adding features increases complexity exponentially - I guess it depends on the design of the system, but that hasn't been my ex
