Most of the VFX industry releases the majority of their techniques as papers, etc. Some of it's kept a secret, but that's happening less and less. There's a lot of competition, but still there's a lot of open stuff like OSL, OIIO, OCIO, OpenSubDiv that multiple facilities contribute to.
