I see where you're going with your rule: services that provide True Value™ would likely survive if they suddenly started charging a nominal fee right now. However, as a game developer with Free-To-Play development PTSD, I think this ru

Game developer here: SteamSpy's data is actually very accurate. We have a game on Steam and the actual sales figures are well within the error margins specified on the site. And other local devs has said the same about their games as w

Question for the more security-savvy among you: If the leak happened in 2012 and I've changed my password since then (it's listed in your account page [1]), do I need to change it again? Logic tells me I've got nothing to wor

Honestly, you can make a horribly inefficient game using any engine. Unity just has a lower barrier to entry, as it's very hobbyist-friendly (as you rightly point out), so there's more games being made overall with it, more games

I think your post is a little misleading in that #1 implies working for BigCo on the first read-through, but then working for yourself on your own business stuck with a single major client on the second read-through. Perhaps some people wil

This is a very serious hit to the appeal of Twitch.tv IMO. And it really feels like they were strongarmed into this, given the site was designed from day 1 for this kind of use.

Excellent points all around! As an indie developer myself I've had to learn these lessons the hard way. I'd also like to throw in one additional point: Selling apps up front for $0.99 is a bad idea. It makes it look and feel cheap

Fellow (mobile) game developer here, congrats on the launch! Can you tell us about the development cycle for this game? Were you alone, did it take a year full-time, etc? I'm curious.

Cocos2d-x handles the game engine side of things really well (scene graph, asset management, input handling, etc.) and all that runs cross-platform without any issues. But Marmalade comes in real handy for all the platform-specific stuff li

The game was built with Cocos2d-x [1], a C++ port of the excellent Cocos2d game engine, and Marmalade [2], our cross-platform SDK/OS abstraction layer so we can port it quickly to other platforms like Android, WP8 and BB10. The main re

Oh man I would love to get this game on Steam. Not sure it would be a great fit for the platform though, as such traditionally hardcore gamers can be rather hostile to freemium. Some day we might rebalance it to be a premium game if we get

We actually have a full set of In-App Purchases (IAPs) ranging from $2 to $99, as well as the $5 coin doubler. That being said, we're not trying to monetize by being heavy-handed and squeezing players for money with paywalls and the li

I can certainly appreciate the precision of Lego pieces, as I too have mixed and matched incredibly old pieces from my parents's era (1970s) with more recent (2000s) stuff. And I think the OP did a decent job collecting precision data for t

I have fond memories of spending entire weeks programming the old Mindstorms NXT kits for an infamous undergrad ECE course at McGill... It's strange that Lego markets this so heavily towards children when there's more than enough complexity

Sorry, but you're really attacking a straw man here. Neither C# itself nor the OP's article sell C# as being a prime language for functional, dynamic, or systems programming. Rather, it has inherited some convenient little bits of each para

I think this app is excellent, both in its idea, its (brief) presentation and what it promises to become, but the execution could use some work for now... Random concerns that I have, assuming you want this to grow into a big, comprehensive
