I'm somewhat surprised by this. Do you have a source or news article?

Unfortunately K&R is all-rights-reserved copyright by Bell Labs, so this is illegal. It's also a bit ironic that you have this at the bottom of your own website: © 2005-2009 White Paper Clip, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Stealing

Yes. My wife's from Namibia and her mother tongue is Afrikaans (but she speaks English as well as we do). We try to speak mostly Afrikaans to our daughter Marica, who's now two. Our theory is that "she'll learn English anyway", and that's d

Glancing at someone's behind in the supermarket is qualitatively different from porn. As far staring at buttocks goes, you're right that we've all done it, but does that make it a Good Thing? Anyway, not sure if this is OT or not, so I'll

GitHub does look cool. However, I'm wondering what advantages Git will give me over Subversion for small and medium-sized projects? I guess I'm really asking what's the advantage of distributed version control over centralized for Joe Coder

Ask HN/PG: Asterisks around something make it italics (except in indented code, apparently). In the above comment I had to remove a literal asterisk in the text because I couldn't figure out how to escape it. Backslash doesn't work, and t

Very interesting. However, this kind of thing: "Most significantly, when children are born, the father may have little or no responsibility for his offspring..." -- that's terrible. That WP paragraph "Walking marriages" somehow reminds me

Yep, that's exactly the kind of thing DecentURL's for. Though it's even better for modifying (say) YouTube URLs which don't have any meaning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4cmrMJul1g turns into http://youtube.decenturl.com/mr-bean-swim

Thanks for the mention. :-) Yes, the first thing I thought about twi.bz was, "I thought I already solved this with DecentURL" ... but I didn't quite. Looks like twi.bz is still about shortening URLs, whereas DecentURL is about making URLs

Cool, and I like Guido's way of making decisions. But I'm just wondering why they're switching. Did they find that Subversion wasn't working for them?

Good point. To be fair, however, he's probably just being intellectually curious -- that is, "hacking". There's no way you'd test a number for evenness in real life by either recursion or iteration. You'd always do either (n&1)==0 or

That is funny. "Browser-dependent scripting language" isn't too bad for JavaScript. But "stand-alone program" for Java? That's kind of like calling English a "stand-alone dictionary". Sure, I'm a programmer. But why is it so easy for a jo

In Python you can create a class at "runtime" using "type(name, bases, dict)" as per http://docs.python.org/library/functions.html#type You can also use "new.classobj(name, bases, dict)" -- not quite sure what the difference is.

Dead right about how hard it is to create a community. That's one of the two main reasons microPledge.com didn't really work out for us.

Why would you stay far away from bbPress? I really like how simple it looks&feels, and how one just needs PHP+MySQL to get it going. (I'll look into the Drupal forums.)

HN is simple, but it's written in Arc/Lisp, which I don't know, so customization and maintenance would be difficult. reddit is a possibility, because I know Python, but I felt it was quite large-scale. Maybe I should look at the code proper

You're right -- my bad. I guess I've always called extensions "plugins", partly because I don't care about actual plugins very much. (Time to change.) I'll add an update to the blog post to clarify.

Yeah, I know you can't do it over HTTPS -- with HTTPS over a proxy, all the proxy can know is the hostname. Such an extension system would be HTTP-only, but I don't think it'd therefore be useless.
