I don't think we know what causes it. It is mainly just observed. What causes this is a very active area of study. Probably some output of a "evolutionary" process of how viruii mutate but my knowledge is very little :)

If it was more deadly it would spread less quickly. That's how diseases work from my vague university memories of an epidemiology course. They are on a spectrum of deadly to contagious.

I know that in theory a heat pump can do better, but in cold enough climate it can't because one side collects condensation and freezes making it less than 100% efficient. So no, we can't do better.

I got a nice microphone but it's not directional and it picks up way too much ambient noise. Also I think it might echo (MacBook pro) so I just switched back to the internal microphone cause it seems to noise cancel correctly. Does any

Excellent point. And to drive a steak further into this idea - ironically gambling is the one where all the prices / chance / rewards are absolutely known up front and calculable. I guess that's what sets wall st. apart from

The problem is that economy and technology shifts. Not so great when you are a cold fusion developer today as an example. So it is required to hedge against that isn't it. You need to ensure you have a future by saving for retirement.

A friend of mine (Canadian) uses piracy sites a lot for one reason: all the content they are interested in is geofenced to USA and completely unavailable in the country (Hulu)

It's already starting. I've heard that Nvidia developed a cutting edge computing audit system, that was developed to detect, in real time, that GPUs are being used for calculating simple hashing algorithms and sniffs out all compu

Replace the word house with land. Does that change anything? Who owns the land? The "government" is just people. And if there is not enough land because one person owns it all, absolutely I would be in favor of taking it and givin

I rent as well and I think it's smart. Below a certain wage however, in any city, there is a large cohort who can't afford to purchase so they are forced into renting. These are the people I mean when I say no choice. To reply to

Well I think the main issue is investors in real estate to then rent out are taking a business risk. There is no zero risk income. The renter on the other hand has no choice but to rent shelter. This is justified in my opinion.

Wow so all that junk mail I get in the mail every day is dwarfing the co2 emissions of Bitcoin?

This here is the problem. Gold does use a lot of CO2 yes (heavy equipment construction and operation), but that's not even the worst thing. Mining literally is poisoning water, and destroying very large ecosystems. And carbon tax won&#

Bitcoin doesn't use several countries worth of CO2. It has been "calculated" that "cryptocurrency" uses as much electricity as a small country. But that is not Bitcoin. Bitcoin does not use GPUs to mine. They use sp

Children may have more net co2 output but they perpetuate the human race so you might say it's worth it. Cats are just waiting for us to stop moving for long enough so we can be their next meal!

Space bar is hilarious for me on YouTube/Firefox. Some times it gets into a certain focus state (play button focussed?) and hitting space bar will briefly pause it, then resume playback. Hilarity ensues as I scramble, pausing a few tim

I think paying an artist is not so straight forward. The artist must set up a bank account. Now they must sign somewhere to accept credit cards. Now they must have art that is friendly to said card processor, or else you get deplatformed. S

I think the article is about the opportunity cost of the down payment. Since compound interest is so powerful it will usually outpace the house in value after 20 yrs or so. Plus where I live, renting seems to be cheaper for equivalent house

I don't really agree with that assessment. If there is mass layoffs for example, and renters can't pay rent, why would a landlord evict the tenant? Who is going to take their place? I think many landlords would prefer a potential
