It's just a data point. I have no idea how they really compare, or which one is in "worse" shape. As a DC resident, I know the impending metro shutdown is going to be a disaster.

Yes, but you're not stack ranking in only teams of 10. You're stack-ranking 10 teams of ten. Out of 100 people, I can probably find 10% who are duds vs. their peers, but they might you might have teams with 2+ low performers.

No, not according to these numbers. $2,528 for WMATA vs. $2,127 for BART. (Operating budget divided by daily riders.)

Within bounds of statistical variance, this is an interesting idea. I'm thinking of small sample sizes and the negatives of publicly posting an algorithmicly-derived statement of, effectively, racism. And do we normalize against those

Those actions are the same at every level of company. I think it's harder at big companies because you don't have the opportunity to offer (or withhold) support or create perceptions about people you literally might never come

I worked at a place that stack-ranked, and we didn't have this problem. It was typically pretty clear and well-accepted (by both leadership and peers) that high performers were in fact the best people. In a big enough company, you can

How many attacks were stopped by the TSA? Directly: 0. Hell, they're 0/2 on known attempts (the Shoe Bomber in 2001 and Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in 2009), both thwarted instead by passengers and crew. Indirectly? (E.g., how

As a "tulip" (opt-out), the forced trust is even worse. You're not even allowed to ask for a pat-down before your things are on the conveyor. I've tried. Usually the timing works out OK, but sometimes it doesn't.

The only problem with ranges is anchoring , particularly with dollars and cents. If I tell you it will be $1-10M, you're going to anchor on $1M (and be pissed when I come in at $8M). (The reverse is true for, say, salaries. If you tel
