Right to privacy. Companies have never had carte blanche to create any terms they like. Many types of contractual agreement are illegal or unenforceable. Your landlord can’t just turn up and start rifling through your stuff, and the owner o

Not really. It’s unacceptable for Dropbox to know/inspect what content you’re storing, scan it for anything without you actively requesting they do so, and certainly to delete it. This behaviour and any terms of service that allow it s

The important thing is that job duties often don’t have to stay static. Especially if you are already doing a good job at what you want to be doing and keeping someone senior happy, it’s often possible and sometimes even surprisingly easy t

I found that the more I delivered and the happier I made senior people, the more I could ignore the rules and process and friction and get stuff done. Probably a year or so in I barely paid any notice to most of it. I had a huge amount of f

Let’s not do this. It is a gross vision for the future. I hate the cloud. IMO we should be working towards self hosting appliances, federated and otherwise decentralised services, and local-first applications.

Over time the number of single humans that have the power to wipe out a sizeable portion of life on Earth (which is almost certainly non-zero already) will almost certainly increase due to advances in technology and dissemination of informa

Good question. I would apply that reasoning to the information about how a gun works for sure, but IMO there is some (admittedly hard to define) amount of danger or perhaps destructive power beyond which we might or perhaps should choose as

I’d argue there is a moral imperative to create and release tools like this as free and open source software so that anyone has access to them and can choose whether to use them, rather than only sophisticated and well resourced adversari

To quote Matt Levine[1], who I think was making the same point more eloquently: > Elon Musk does not like remote work, which, you know, fine, but this strikes me as being less about remote work and more about a general culture of being o

My favourite tip for low bandwidth connections (on Zoom at least) is the “stop incoming video” option which can be enabled in settings, and then turned on individually during a call from the view menu. It stops the streaming of everyone els

Agree 100%. The decision is far more about the culture leaders want to create in their organisations than about the “right” or “best” way to do things.

It’s perfectly reasonable to think both “neat design” and “fuck them” at the same time. No-one’s nice design has a right to exist nor does their business have a right to work out. Personally I’ll do what I can do make DRM fail and companies

The alternative is to treat higher learning like any other experience in life or on your CV/resume: you do it, you tell people you did it, then you either convince them that doing it imparted something useful on you or you don’t. As so
