I wasn't saying that you can't use different algorithms based on inputs/data/circumstances. The issue I have is articles like this always try to make things stupidly configurable and general - like "I want to be able to hot swap this algori

Perhaps the difference then, was that I read through the article thinking "WTF would you do that" and "eugh that code looks rubbish". I'm guessing some other people were thinking "Oh how true! Java is such a bad language" which I think is a

Only if you don't know what you're doing and need to write several algorithms that you can try out at runtime :/ It's an absurd use case IMHO

> "Culture exists and can't be ignored" Yeah it can, why can't I ignore culture? I download a tool, and use it as I wish to within my company.

I have never cared about, or taken notice of any 'culture'. I agree that some programmers do, but I think you only pay attention to 'culture' if you don't really know what you're doing. These are the programmers that copy and paste code fro

It gets absurd very quickly. Anyone who programs like that is a bad programmer. That's the fact. It's nothing to do with the language being used.

There were also several startups that gave out shares to their users during the last boom. I read it as suggesting the above - just give each facebook user a few shares in facebook.

Fitting a model to "predict" events that have already happened, isn't anywhere as hard as actually predicting events that have yet to happen.

"and I don't know if its intentional" Surely you jest :) If there's one thing 37signals do extremely well it's getting people to talk/write about them.

I'd assume they measured it with real user usage. You're much more likely to close recently opened tabs though.

That's a better comparison. 3D is like smell-o-vision would be - a gimmick, distracting, and adding nothing to the story.

The comparison isn't even worth bringing up. Talkies = NO SOUND vs SOUND. It's binary. 3D = "20 visual cues about 3D" vs "19 visual cues about 3D" We already see movies in 3D without adding the rather crude stereoscopy effect.

Privacy is dead. People are posting intimate details of their lives on the net. Sending naked pics around their phones. They killed privacy off themselves because it gives them freedom in other ways.

If they break the way HTTP_REFERER etc work, I would stop using them and find something else. Stop trying to spin this as "something that needs fixing".

Not sure that worked so well for Diaspora. Can you give some examples of companies that have successfully "smeared" the market leader with FUD and ended up ahead?

Have you worked with Google and had a bad experience? The people I've worked with there have been extremely helpful and refreshingly 'good'. It's very easy to wrongly assume that a big company that makes profit will treat everyone poorly, b

You haven't begun to establish people want it "solved". There are already solutions for the people who want them (stop sending referer, adblock, etc). FWIW, I do not want Google to change their behavior in this area.

I agree. Attacking the market leader seems desperate to me, and I think it'll lose a lot of goodwill. You don't win customers/users by saying "Our competitor is rubbish and here's why". You win them by saying "Our product is awesome and her

Constantly attacking Google over something the vast majority of users don't care about seems like a bad idea. I was ready to try duckduckgo if it could give me the results I wanted (Despite the hugely irritating UI and infinite scroll). But

If you can't notice the 3d, what's the point. If you can notice it, it distracts from what is going on. It's a no-win situation. Of course it's a win-win situation for the studios selling people 3d.

Surely 3d only makes any sense if you can move around the environment - a holo-deck. 3d movies, where we're all sat down in a fixed chair makes absolutely no sense. It's a gimmick that adds nothing - apart from headaches, crappy dark image

Certainly not. Despite the fact that irc.com would be blocking yourself into a specific protocol and not building a brand, I doubt anyone here has ever thought to go to irc.com. I think building it around irc.com would have actually worked
