"people" use skype all the time. I'm not sure video calling from mobiles will really take off. It's been available on other phones for quite a while now if you look for them. I really only want to video-call when I'm at home. For which skyp

The commercial is well done (It pulls lots of heart strings for some people), but it's ridiculous to assume those are the main use cases. 90% use will be for remote sex. But knowing Apple they'll probably detect nude flesh and censor it ;)

So Apple have made a skype clone for their iPhone :/ Call me unmoved, and unexcited. Why is this important? We've been doing video conferencing for decades now. You can also just download 'fring' for free on Android to get skype video calls

I can only say that of the cheese I've eaten in restaurants, Frys, Safeway, etc it's been universally horrible. Yes, perhaps if you go to a niche speciality cheese corner shop, you can find good cheese in the US. But that's not much use.

Turning adblock off doesn't necessarily mean anything. The fact you install adblock at all, means you're not a good demographic in terms of advertising - even if you turn adblock off.

Coke has a horrible aftertaste IMHO. I can't drink much of it at all. Pepsi is far sweeter. Pepsi Max is the best though.

This is also why all cheese in the US tastes to Europeans like plastic. It's extremely surprising that people actually buy cheese in the US, and they seem to have it with everything as well :/ To anyone who has tasted real cheese, it's just

Because the Reddit userbase they have cultivated is (IMHO) not a good one to advertise to. The userbase is anti-consumerist. They HATE things like Coca-Cola. They hate TV. They detest adverts etc etc etc

Surely the traffic/load isn't that variable? Seems like even a VPS provider (linode/slicehost/etc) would offer far more bang for the buck. The pricing for bandwidth alone on EC2 is simply insane.

Paying users aren't the only way. Reddit could have started at the outset with adverts. They could have made that decision early on that they were going to generate revenue. But they didn't - which is why Reddit has attracted the sort of de

It's trivial to get past adblock, but the fact that users use adblock means they're not the type of user you can monetize easily. Getting past adblock doesn't really help. Changing the userbase does, but it's a bit late for that :/

lipstick.com was always going to be far easier to monetize. (The site Reddit made for Conde Naste before they bought Reddit). Celebs? Gossip? Woman demographics? non techie? Jeez you'd have been able to make millions... http://web.archive.

They have a userbase which is ridiculously hard to monetize (IMHO). I'd bet the % of adblock users on Reddit is way higher than the average. The Reddit crowd aren't your average mainstream user. It's a particular crowd (liberal anti-capital

It seems likely they aren't actually making a profit yet. 4 engineers, servers, etc seem like they could be costing way more than a few ads bring in.

Definitely interesting stuff. To a certain extent though we get to 'brute-force' a solution. After the 20th tantrum, and the 20th different thing we try, we'll probably find something that works for that particular child. Of course it'll li
