I'm pretty sure hundreds of large companies make donations, allow employees time to work on FOSS, and so on. Still awesome to see duckduckgo do it of course.

GC isn't a problem for realtime systems, if configured correctly. For example, have the GC running incrementally in a separate thread.

Attaching code to scroll events will never be a good idea. Infinite scroll will never be a good idea.

> In any case, I intend to take a printout to my next medical visit. I'm sure doctors hate this. I'm of the opinion we should leave trained professionals to do their job.

Fits right in with jquery. Then in the next version they can announce it's 2000% faster.

Few reasons... * I don't think the tech is mature enough to be 100% reliable * It'll probably just worry people more than anything. * Doctors are trained. Some guy getting this thing isn't. I think it's a hypercondriacs dream.

Back turned? :/ Over here (UK) there's a desk, in a corner, with a chair next to it. The doc sits at the desk, using the computer, facing you sitting on the chair to the side. Works pretty well for doctors surgeries anyway. But I have no id

Over-engineering increases the likelihood of bugs. Simple and elegant = less bugs. XML is the epitome of over engineering.

Building a business isn't about 'a punch'. It's about hard work, day after day for a long time. Convore has got a nice UI, they haven't really got traction yet, and there's space for tons of chat like services. They're nothing new, they'v

Yeah I had In-N-Out once, it was ok enough. St. Johns is a great burger place just off 101, around Santa Clara. Good programming bookshop nearby also.

Same difference really... mov edi, blah mov byte [edi+1], 17 // Modify the instruction to mov al, 17 // Later... blah: mov al, 7 There's pretty much a 1->1 mapping between assembly language and machine code,

non-LISP derived? There's no difference between code and data in assembly language, but it's not LISP derived. Having no distinction between code and data isn't a LISP invention, it's the 'default' on computers.

Everyone is a minority depending on what criteria you use. People should grow the hell up and stop being offended by everything.

> Um... in what way is it not a sexist assumption? Because it's statistics. 99%+ of relationship advice columns are by females. Is it sexist to give women lower rates for car insurance? Is it sexist to give men different rates for life

If you're going into 'tech' to get recognition, you're probably going into it for the wrong reasons. This debate reminds me of the failed 'Women only shortlists" debacle in the UK under the Labour government, where they put forward only Wom

If you were reading a relationship advice column, you'd assume it was written by a woman. That's not sexism. And do we need more men in 'relationship advice'? Only if they want to be there. I really wish this ridiculous and unhelpful "There

It's condescending, belittling and sarcastic IMHO. Judge things on their merit. Seeing posts upvoted simply because they're made by females is sad.

Don't forget the reverse sexism always at play on HN. Oh meh a new website someone wrote. Nothing new... Holy cow it says it was written by a woman upvote! Well done her! Amazing!

FWIW in the UK all hospital beds have their own TV/Internet/Phone device that is attached to the wall and swings over the bed to where you want it. It costs money to use, but you can at least watch what you want, browse the web, send emails

> Don't get too caught up using graphs to assume relevancy, Myspace still gets a lot of traffic. Also not sure what you mean. Traffic == relevancy. If something gets a lot of users, surely by the definition of the word, it's 'relevant'.
