2. Show me a VPS host that has cheap bandwidth. For example, lets say we need 10TB of transfer. Slicehost: $3,000 (0.30/GB !!! WTF are they smoking) Amazon: $1,250 (Assume 5TB in, 5TB out, in US) Linode: $1,000 (0.10/GB Good for VPS

The top 20 public groups topped out at about 250 users last night, add on a bit for the other public groups and a little for private groups. Maybe 400 concurrent users max so far? Just my guess, but I'd be surprised if it's orders of magnit

Downsides to VPS 1. You pay stupidly high *monthly* costs based on RAM. This makes little sense, as RAM is ridiculously cheap. 2. You pay masses for bandwidth if you go over.

FWIW, I'd recommend Java NIO, it's served me really well on Mibbit, so feel free to ping me if you decide to go that route. Whatever language you choose though there's plenty of interesting scaling problems to work on ;)

Well, everything is a trade off. It depends what you're running. I use incgc with very good results compared to the defaults. The defaults usually result in pauses (Not good for something like mibbit), also defaults simply can't keep up wit

I assume you're being sarcastic. How about the government concentrate on reducing the massive debt or getting a decent healthcare system setup? Waging war and pointless internet censorship aren't high on my list.

I assume you're talking about the GC defaults . It's not hard to switch it to doing incremental garbage collection, or one of the other numerous strategies available.

You do have to feel for them though. The new sites on the block don't have to care about making money. They've got the VC money flowing nicely. So they can just have a free, open, lovely website.

FWIW, surely EE are in it to make profit. They've probably made a lot of money. You don't make a user hostile site for the hell of it, or because you hate your users. You make a user hostile site to make money. And my guess is EE makes mill

I would have upvoted it if it wasn't for the hyperbole. It was a good story, with a crappy title. So I didn't upvote. I get tired of everything ;)

Because HN used to be above that linkbait BS. The story is interesting and useful and stands up on its own without having to resort to "in only 300 lines!!!".

I've heard this explanation before, but haven't seen any data from taste tests that include consuming a whole can. It's an interesting explanation, but doesn't seem backed up by data :/ All very well for Coke to say "If you did this, your r

The "secret recipe" is simply marketing. It gets them in the news every so often, and makes the public believe it can't be replicated by competitors. IMHO Coke tastes horrible. Can't stand the stuff. Only Pepsi Max will do.

Pepsi actually beats Coke in most taste tests. edit: I know, Pepsi isn't a "generic brand cola", just saying, Coke isn't usually rated the best.

Even if WebSocket didn't have supposed security concerns when used with buggy web caches, I'm extremely doubtful that MS would have supported them.

2 failing companies teaming up doesn't equal success in my book. Nokia could have started making great hardware again like they used to. They could have put Android on it, and done what HTC does. Unfortunately they haven't made a good phone

I agree with you. Writing protocols, websites, creating new programming languages... all relatively simple. Getting people to use what you built is the hard bit.

Twitter is used by techies, and the media/PR. I'd say it's safe to say a large amount of people have tried twitter, but their retention rate is abysmal.

Deal, although I'm not sure that's a good criteria. Obviously Twitter is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If AOL had 100Bn in the bank, maybe they'd buy twitter for 10Bn. But to me, that wouldn't prove Twitter is worth 10bn on a
