Without the ads business, Twitter will be operating at huge loss, much larger than recent times. The best way to monetize attention is through ads. I'm not saying that I am happy with that, but there is a lot of evidence to suggest tha

This is false. Not that it matters to the wider argument but UK has plenty of power projection capabilities to mount an offensive in Morocco. Morocco is even within reasonable distance for the UK to run sorties from UK air bases, let alone

Cookies are just completely broken. The EU should never have got involved in the way that it did. No matter how positive the intentions, the web is a worse experience as a result, with marginal privacy gains.

It would be fascinating to see the design review document and resulting launch metrics for this. Somewhere deep in Google there is a written justification for the previous dark pattern.

I think you have it half backwards. Existing transportation options and infrastructure are bad. That has meant that travel cost in time and money is too high when compared to the post-pandemic benefit we get from co-working. The internet an

Why did it happen? Because the average consumer of the apps and logs doesn’t care. Change logs are also another surface that has to be vetted by legal, approved etc. Why do the extra work for no gain?

A few initial thoughts: - This is a win for the polygon network and USDC adoption - Twitter payouts is a small (in value) but high profile place to start - I can see this being great for use cases where your bank might restrict withdrawals

I suspect the mechanism driving this goes all the way down to basic biology. Everything is a spectrum. Take gene regulation networks or protein-protein interaction networks. They are both extremely complex and nonlinear. Perturbations to on

Bingo. Filter bubbles are nothing new. Newspapers are lo-fi filter bubbles. Each newspaper occupied a different part of the political spectrum with its own biases. The concept of "following" is also a filter bubble. People will na

I work on FAANG-scale recommender systems. Most of the time, due to the scale of the problem, the algorithms powering these systems are not anywhere near state of the art. On the other hand, they are highly optimised for the situation. You

I disagree. If it’s on the web it should be fair game. These models are not directly cutting and pasting, it’s my opinion that they’re learning some higher level features and attributes. Admittedly, not everyone shares that opinion. Humans

The authors of the Dall-E 2 / unCLIP paper describe some of their efforts to mitigate biases in the paper. ML models will always exhibit the biases present in their training dataset, without intervention. It's not really possible

This is a cute question. Not today! I hope someone comes back to read this question in 10-15 years time, when we will all have the ability to train Dall-E quality models on our AR glasses.

This is only surprising if you're not familiar with product launches that result from R&D. In this case DALL-E 2 is the consumer-facing name, unCLIP is the name used during research and in this case for publication. OpenAI may also

Thanks for sharing this. Why do more companies not follow this philosophy? Perhaps one advantage for Netflix is that they’re largely a one-trick pony. They don’t have 20+ products fighting for attention and engineers within the company.
