Fair point. Personally, I learned far more about network programming from Beej's famous guide[1] than any code I dug into. Then again, it's one of those things where you don't know what you don't know. Even so, I thin

Not sure if I'd agree with extreme disadvantage, perhaps slight. I'd wager most even super competent C programmers rarely to never look under the hood at such things. That said, to me, while C the language is super simple and eas

Agreed. I think holding executives criminally liable for their company would change a -lot- in a good way. More hiring, increased wages, increased safety standards just to name a few. I know if I were liable and in charge, I'd only

I mean, it's not that different than the current model. With XB1 for example, you lose access to the 'free' games, as well as the ability to play online, if you don't have a monthly subscription. For single player offl

Can't disagree more. I don't live in a big city. My best guess at where the data center is would be a mid-size city about an hour away, or more likely, a big city about 2.5 hours away (driving time). I didn't have high hop

I'll try to keep mine somewhat realistic. 1 - Rise and fall of AI. Not complete fall, mind you. I think companies are going to try to replace humans with AI everywhere they can, and people are going to push back against it. 2 - Self

Reading this made me a bit sad. So many people were optimistic, and many predicted exciting things... but few if any of that happened.

I think you may be taking away a different than intended lesson. The implication is that you can wash the car with a broken hose(tape it!), or with no hose at all(buckets/pans).

This feels like a bad translationparty(if that even still exists). The last sentences in particular make it feel scammy. On that note, I don't understand what pride foreign companies take in writing their own English. I'm an engi

That one hurt. AMD had hired Keller, and rumblings of a new generation were afoot. I'd just bought a house and had no spare cash, so told my trusted coworker to go all in on AMD. He had no spare cash either. Now we once a year have

Absolutely, but I hope my comment was not taken as an endorsement by any means. I don't think most folks know how rampant it is. It was something I had read about and knew existed, but seeing it in person is eye opening. I know it&#

Yeah, but you can't find an 18 year old woman to marry you as a modern day indentured servant in the midwest. Ninety percent or so of the old white men I encountered in SEA had his arm around some poor childlike girl.

65 years for tax fraud? I mean, it's scummy, sure, but that long? First degree, premeditated murderers get less...

Merry Christmas HN. I laugh, learn, and even cry sometimes from this place. The only "social network" that makes me feel at home, despite living far away from its epicenter.

I don't agree here with your premise. You claim not to care if people block ads, but that's the default behavior. "Brave Rewards" is opt in. Additionally, as they show ads as system notifications, I've never equat

I don't have a simple setup, I optimize everything. Everything, and I mean everything, is paid for by credit card. You get rewards, and more importantly, protections that aren't afforded to you by paying other means. Some even

Same! And I hate myself for it. I know it's bullshit, but reminds me I guess that there could be other people who are gonna take the room before I can. Sigh, we're suckers.

Putting Feynman aside, this is how -all- teachers should be. I had maybe two in all my years of public school that came anywhere close. It's sad that teaching is not a highly paid and prestigious job. And it's a two way street,

Out of curiosity, I signed up for this guy's mailing list earlier in the year, the first I can remember doing on purpose in many years. I am pleasantly surprised at the weekly content and general openness of the author, and would abso

What in your opinion is the benefit/difference of this, versus commenting nonobvious code? I tend to prefer the latter. Each time I work on someone else's code, I'm elated if they write longform comments about what they

Right? It's such a braindead thing to ask. Imagine having a package on your porch, and seeing someone walk up your driveway and grab it. That's a good way to get punched before you have time to explain.

Amazon doesn't seem much better. Last week, they 'delivered' an item, marked it delivered. The problem with that is that I didn't get it, and the picture proof was not my house. I have no idea whose house it was. Whe

For sure. I wasn't intending to give life advice, just a personal account for younger folks who regret/are afraid of parenting. It's easy to change without realizing when it happened!

Out of curiosity, how old are you? I was much more selfish and 'go go go' in my 20s. In my mid thirties now and mellowed a lot. I find parenting a joy now, but think I would have hated it 10 years ago.
