read==listen here. Do a search for "manipulate" in the text for a simple counter-argument. tellingly. None of the critiques I see address these counterarguments even, so I suspect knee-jerk responses are mostly whats posted here.

Commenters saying: "but someone can influence the market" should at least listen to the podcast (and really should also) familiarize themselves with the existing literature. Do you think this critique has never been considered?

To determine if they are employees we look for ways the Uber/driver relationship is similar and different to other businesses using the employee model. To determine if they are contractors we look for ways the user/driver relation

I think you are correct about having your instance listed, but I created my own server from a digital ocean droplet (newathens.net) (its quite easy) and I can follow anyone. So I don't know about that second part

This doesn't make much sense to me. Considering the high degree of competition in ~all rental markets, claims of monopoly are unfounded. Returns on capital for land-owning businesses aren't higher than other sectors. In the US in

What's the deal with landlord hate? If I buy a lawnmower, pool, or whatever else and rent it out you all are ok with that. If I buy a house and rent it out suddenly I'm an "enemy of the people".

There's nothing insincere about it. It's a simple acknowledgement of the other persons contribution to a positive interaction. Trust me, no normal person is gets upset if you give them thanks or a compliment.

Here's how I avoid any appearance of a negative tone: Before I try to correct an error, or ask for anything, I always preface it with "Thanks a lot for <replying, doing something previously, I agree with X, etc...>"

Apple claimed 'one in a trillion' chance of a collision. This is a great example of why you should not trust such an assessment.

The actual distribution will depend on the confining potential. The arrangement that minimizes the total potential energy of the system is just some regular (crystalline) structure. This is an ionic crystal in a harmonic potential well htt

Yes, users are price sensitive when it comes to selling their privacy. They also have a different sensitivity upon consideration of who the other party is and their perceived/intended use of the data. To me, this isn't so surprisi

You need to look a bit more carefully, and ideally at more than just at the one link. The US and gov controlled the country entirely at one point. By 2017 The large swaths of the country are contested. 61% by 2018. The writing was on the w

Take a look at the territory controlled by the Taliban vs time while we were at this level. They were not contained. We just were keeping them out of a few urban areas. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57933979

No opinion on this paper but I'll note something related of interest: You can see how special relativity is true by just taking Maxwell's equations seriously. They show the speed of light is the same in every reference frame.

This is only 'not discussed' in the popular literature. The scientists and modelers are definitely take this into account. But its is a tricky thing to get right. https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en

You can only think this is crazy if you haven't dealt with the Patent Office. They just can't do the job everyone thinks they are doing, so we'd be better of without patents at all.

Use something similar to this (gather.town) just this week for a virtual conference. You can walk right up to people in the expo and start video chatting etc... Seems like a good use-case for this. Not quite like being there, but pretty fun

For high vacuum (i.e. NOT UHV), Viton gaskets are fine basically anywhere. They leak water however. If you have some odd shapes that are hard to clamp you can use any variety of epoxies (from e.g. https://www.epotek.com/ )
