The timing is way too convenient. The current American government hates tech companies due to their generally left leaning ideologies: https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/06/26/trump-says-big-tech-comp... ht

It would be quite amusing to see engineers trying to explain search algorithms to politicians and lawyers, I admit. Not as amusing as the questions they might ask or the solutions they might suggest, though.

Solution: allow these companies to bid for the spot. Like they're doing in the EU for the choice of default search engine in Chrome. Allow power users to pick a default, so we don't have to suffer through terrible third party cont

Facebook and Google are both sources of "free" news these days (the quality and neutrality may vary though.) This represents a major challenge for newspapers which are struggling to monetize their content. Adtech has also impacted

This is great advice and isn't followed often enough, especially when reviewing code written by people new to an organization/team: > If you see something nice in the CL, tell the developer, especially when they addressed one o

On Android, you do have the freedom to install whatever app you want without having to root. You can also install alternative app stores.

Can someone help me understand why technologists and entrepreneurs on HN cheer on "ending the tech industry's free reign", when they are part of the very same tech industry?

Feel free to add them to your robots.txt; they won't scrape you then (but they won't index or rank you either)

No, the equivalent is you walking into a store to buy DVDs, and the store manager keeping a record of what sells well, and what you show interest in, etc. to drive decisions about what to stock next.

I feel like all these articles follow a pattern: they take a common, well known aspect of technology (in this case, analytics trackers), search for any cases where a major tech company is involved, and come up with the most clickbaity headl

What about all the people around the world who can't afford to pay for the services that adtech currently pays for for them? Why do you feel you can make the decision to get rid of adtech on their behalf?

I'd add jq ( https://stedolan.github.io/jq/ ) to the list. JSON data is so common, and jq makes working with it a breeze.

One of my previous teams used to do something similar, but the initial PR would be for a change to the docs for the project. Would be great, because the docs would be updated to reflect any new changes automatically.
