I created an alternative spreadsheet to pg's that is formula-based, which explains some of the final numbers. (At least that's the intention.) In particular, where the 3.7% adjustment for the pool refresh comes from. https://spreadsheets.g

Try thinking about things in life that you want to do but can't. Usually there's no reason, it's just the way things have always been. You can disrupt these things. Look at the global fallout of the film and music industries. We did that. U

I'm not sure that I'd pay for this -- it's too easy to build something customised -- but a FOSS "standard" API would be cool. I presume a paid service could offer cross-product achievements, which might have legs.

I'm trying to make that call at the moment. I've been using Ubuntu on laptops since 5.10 (Badger) and Debian before that. 10.10 has by far the most regressions in it that I've encountered during this time. If this were my project, I wouldn'

For what is worth, suspend/resume works on my laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (Sony Vaio F-series) and it is completely broken in Ubuntu 10.10. Touché.

It's not really like Sun. Sun couldn't accept that it had lost the hardware game a decade before its demise. It had great kit, it was just the market was so vanishingly small that it was never going to support the mothership. It had also lo

Nope. In a word. There are completely different production values between the two media. Video can be very informative when it is instructional, and of course when it's entertaining. Video is dull as dish water when it's talking heads, unle

You're only ever a visionary in retrospect. Make that a "confirmed visionary". Reminds me of a friend of mine when we were younger. When asked what he did, he replied, "I'm a rock start. But nobody knows it yet".

That's why I said, "It's not perfect, but a simple, effective guide". It's a guide, not a fait accompli. If it fails that test, then it'll fail more thorough tests. Fail and fail early.

I agree that managing multi language sites/apps adds a significant people cost. This is often woefully underestimated by the business. It's not the tech so much as the content. It's also hard to manage the content unless the development env

Banks Culture books are terrific. Interesting world, great ideas, and terrific storytelling. Not a fan of Vinge myself. Also, it's "Rainbows End", no apostrophe. Oddly, I found this book a bit retro in its application of tech.

Method-chaining has been there for a while. I keep happening upon projects with their own craptacular homebrew MVC framework, and their own abysmal homebrew caching. Fix is a swap for yii and memcached -- feel free to choose your faves.

Just in case the OP is using PHP, there are libraries that support Active Record without necessarily resorting to a PHP framework. (Same as you can AR outside of Rails [caveat emptor, might have changed in Rails3].) Adodb has one. Not a per
