And this is not new, they already do that with the current dom renderer. One div for each wrapped line of text, divs for selection, cursor is a CSS animated div, etc

Makes me wonder if they actually implemented their own kerning..

It already does. The old DOM renderer renders _everything_ by hand. Selected text are absolutely positioned divs, so is the cursor, etc. So switching to canvas is not a big change in that regard.

I wonder how they will _measure_ the text. You can use the range API to get the client rects for individual letters of text nodes in DOM, and then you could render that into a canvas letter-by-letter. You'd get kerning etc handled by t

This is the way to go imo! It also enables parallelization of test runs :) And it also makes testing databases with limited transaction APIs (like DynamoDB) much easier.

It seems to me that if you compare Apple and Microsoft, it's only the latter that cares deeply about the developer experience on their platform. https://github.com/microsoft/winget-cli

FWIW, I'd add a word of caution for this architecture. Coming from an SPA, it feels just like your average react/redux app, except you put your redux state on the server. Your server now maintains the state of all active clients,

They have both. GraalJS itself is just a JS runtime, but they've also made a separate package that reimplements the Node stdlib (but doesn't work on Windows yet, for example)

I like this list :) I'd add to it that developers are the ones birthing these projects, and they (or we, I should say) don't like to be bottle necked by UX.

That's correct. AFAIK Catalina will check online for everything, even binaries you compile yourself.

The title is slightly misleading. ALL macs with a recent macOS (Catalina?) are freezing, since the security checks that happens when you launch a binary is down. Even if you don't update to Big Sur.

On similar posts, people have pointed out that this is something trademark holders essentially _has_ to do in order to protect their trade mark. If there's a history of trademark infringements and you haven't gone after them, appa

The way I understand the physics, it doesn't add to the amplitude ("energy level") of the waves, the whole point is to send out sound waves that works against the sound that's there already, making the total amount of ki

The way I'm put together, both ideas makes me uneasy when I _really_ think about them. There used to be no universe? Ugh :( There's always been an universe? How's that possible? Ugh :(

FWIW this is what I do. And I run stuff in WSL when I occasionally encounter stuff that won't run directly on Win10. Been working for me for about a year now.

A good example would be things like a todolist app and other personal things. It would be nice to make an app like that without having to also scale an entire set of servers and just have the syncing etc be provided by the user of the app

Good point! This is why the e-mail analogy works. You _can_ host your own e-mail, and nobody has to know that you do, you can just do it. But most people settle for a 3rd party. It should be the same with whatever someone comes up to as a &

I hope we never stop trying to find a solution to what just _has_ to happen some day: everyone should have their own server. If I make an app, I can safely assume that the user has a bank account, an e-mail address, etc. What would happen t

I think that's a fair point. But organizational complexity is compared to other measures, such as the complexity of the software itself, the number of dependencies, etc - i.e. the size of the software itself - and the study found that
