I'd say that this part of the ABI is definitely something people code directly against - so there's really no distinction between API and ABI. The parts of the ABI you don't are things like the function calling conventions,

What I'm pointing out is the absurdity of the current state of law. It doesn't matter if Microsoft wrote all of the code from scratch, because according to them the definitions of the interfaces alone -- not code and not header f

I'm not talking about libc. I'm talking about the kernel system call interfaces. They are defined by the kernel, not libc.

As I understand it, Microsoft has copied the Linux kernel system call interfaces and provided their own underlying implementation. Given that Microsoft supported Oracle's view that the structure, sequence, and organization of the Java

AOT compilation for languages like Java is full of interesting challenges. I worked on gcj back in the day, and we had a super interesting Java/C++ interoperability scheme called CNI: https://gcc.gnu.org/java/pap

Awesome. I worked on Guile almost exactly 20 years ago. It's probably very different from what it looked like back then. Emacs-on-Guile was one of Stallman's ideas back then, as well as using it for a GNU tcl implementation. S

I was at Cygnus (and still at RH). The total deal value was actually much higher because it was a stock deal and the Red Hat stock price kept climbing before everything was wrapped up.

An AOT compiler was definitely the primary goal in the early years (my employer was contracted to deliver one for embedded developers). However, for a few of us at least, the main driver eventually became just to have a Free Software imple

I worked on gcj many years ago, and while I suppose it is sad to see it fade from view, I think most of us really felt like we had achieved our goal when Sun created OpenJDK and adopted the license we created (GPL + Classpath Exception).
