I worked on gcj many years ago, and while I suppose it is sad to see it fade from view, I think most of us really felt like we had achieved our goal when Sun created OpenJDK and adopted the license we created (GPL + Classpath Exception).
- pjmlp 13y agoI always thought the goal was to have a AOT compiler for Java. There are lots of those for Java, but OpenJDK isn't one of them.
- atgreen 13y agoAn AOT compiler was definitely the primary goal in the early years (my employer was contracted to deliver one for embedded developers). However, for a few of us at least, the main driver eventually became just to have a Free Software implementation of a high-performance Java-compatible toolchain and runtime for Linux. An AOT compiler based on GCC seemed like the best way to get there at the time. And for a while we were right. The GCJ compiled Eclipse was faster than any JIT-compiled Eclipse a few years back.
