I don't know whether it means security ends up being rethought and we actually eliminate passwords entirely, offloading to the magic links in email or SMS codes but it feels like new generations might benefit from just doing that. Stil

He's not wrong. Michael argues to leave Zuck alone, as he's trying to push the boundaries of innovation, and in a purely optimistic and naive world that can be true, but it's missing such nuances as argued by @acczibit. There

The problem is developers pushing a technical choice of protocol with little regard for user experience. How does the XMPP protocol improve on the user experience? It doesn't unless you have a client/server implementation that can

Agreed, simple installs for the win. The true test. How quickly can I get something running on a pure VPS. Maybe even without docker. How do I build it, how I do run it. Are there pre-packaged binaries, even better.

The project was founded in 2014. It was heavily focused on building a federated protocol before there was anything related to end usability. Maybe they've just flubbed the implementation and done a poor job of it, I don't know. I

I'm sorry but matrix is a convoluted mess. Speaking from experience, when there's a deep focus on protocols and technical architecture before usability it becomes incredibly hard for the consumer side to get started. It's sti

Thanks for pointing those out. I think it could be done on a larger scale but only with buy in from the community and starting with one or two specific services e.g email or app infrastructure.

I mean it's like any real world thing, potentially non profit. A group of people elected to run public services for everyone else which people pay a fair amount to use. Something that's constantly reviewed, where new members can j

Well this leads to my next question. Community led infrastructure. Why is it not a thing? I think that's social housing in the real world. Why does it not exist for digital services? I know we open source things but nothing is run by a

The discussion around email continues to come up time and time again. It yields significant power, it's your online identity effectively, used to access, communicate and unlock everything. We all have some level of discomfort with some

Everything Google is doing comes to the world 10 years later. Being inside Google is like seeing the future. They had all these technologies long ago, now it's just a case of timing and turning them into products. I've learned tha

It's cool, I think a 2x2 grid might be a better layout and maybe a summarised view rather than streams e.g no scrolling. Otherwise it's a lot of information to pack into one page. It's good though.

We ended up building this in-house like most mentioned. Speakeasy and Stainless are productizing it. Our goal was just to make it available for APIs we were offering to others ( https://m3o.com ).

Firstly, gemini is focused on text files, as in the consumption of text files. Services offer logic and computation on top of data, so actual useful things like calendar, events, sms, email, chat. I don't think that's what gemini

It looks like Gemini focuses on text files? I guess what I'm interested in is consuming services via text. Mostly imagine if everything was an API and then we had a single interface for that which was purely text based e.g /google

Self hosting has to evolve. It's that simple. All the devices we now seamlessly use in our house were once kits and DIY. I built my own PCs as a teenager, servers in my first job and then software after. My gut says running stuff in yo

Open source, open protocol. The superapp is the holy grail of consumer experiences but it's only been achieved in a very insular and siloed manner. The old model was ecosystem based and required large players like apple, Google and Mic

This is sort of like the ideal and I think after ruby and php moving on to a new language that can compile down to a self executable makes sense. Whether it's rust or Go to whatever else doesn't matter as much as just taking a new

Doing full P2P just isn't there yet. It makes total sense but without talking about some web3 Blockchain, it's hard to get everyone to run a distributed database, identity server, etc without it being some single binary.
