I think the "never have started" is probably the crux of the matter. People who don't actually build things tend to look at the world from a very different perspective. The focus is more on "how is this thing different from anything else I

What the parent says is that a proper assessment will require an in-depth knowledge of how it is actually implemented. Taking random shots like this article does is like a blind man trying to grope an elephant.

Actually, stuff like git changes how a developer does development. It encourages quick experimentation which can considerably affect the result. I don't care whether it's the "D" of "DVCS" enables it or not, but the end result seems signifi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flux "Flux is usually the integral of a vector quantity over a finite surface." So, I don't think the author is clueless. The vector quantity in this case is the electric field. Edit: although, from reading

Ubuntu/Debian which is more UNIX-y than MacOS in some ways has none of this. Software installation and uninstallation is a breeze. In my 2 months of experience with the Mac, I have found that the Mac is very appealing when it's new. It's be

Regarding your .NET comment, I don't think it's .NET that's the problem. It's Windows that hackers cringe with.

The article states that he refused to let his lawyer act and took charge of proceedings himself many times, so it is not clear how bad the lawyer was.

This is probably the most vividly presented talk I have ever seen in my life. No wonder Google bought Gapminder immediately after this talk.

I don't get it - who compared the odds anywhere in this discussion? It seems to me that the goals are just completely different. DHH is not explicitly aiming to grow the company into a billion dollar mammoth. A startup and its investors are

I loved "A First Course in Abstract Algebra" by Fraleigh. It was a while ago, so I don't quite remember whether it had solutions for the exercises or not. [edit]: There's also Michael Artin's "Algebra" which is somewhat dense (certainly wit

I actually disagree with a couple points there. I think it's not true that entrepreneurs are "born". I come from a culture (middle-class India) where entrepreneurship is so unthinkable, it's almost a taboo. And yet, I think I am very much p

True. Although, the noise in favor of it is also due to complete misinterpretations. People don't realize that the "X of Y" metaphors are rarely very deep; they provide an approximate introduction to a new product, but not much beyond that.

People just love misinterpreting products, comparing them to completely unrelated things and just making noise. That's right. Making noise is the goal. All else is secondary. Can't people just say "Hey look, here's a new product which IS US
