Good idea; though I'd argue 2 is too low, if these aren't "bots" but real humans, it wouldn't be hard for them to adapt by commenting and then upvoting each other. 10+ would be nicer, anyone truly interested in HN would understand why! :)

Captchas were designed to distinguish bots from humans. But that's no longer the problem[1]. You've just got to assume even a "bot" is human now. Casinos don't spot many cheaters at the door, but rather spot them in the act by monitoring th

When you create a patent, are you obligated to follow through with the creation of the product/idea to keep the rights to it, and if so, do you have a limit? Or can the creator of this idea just wait for somebody else to create it, and then

If I see a form, I instantly decide whether it's worth filling in based on how much I want to pass it. And I often press the back button when I'm feeling lazy. …captchas really don't help. Don't fix a problem until it exists, and even then

Considering users were actively trying to install software which they thought was trusted (so would have entered passwords when prompted), I don't find this surprising — is there even much you can do to prevent this kind of thing, apart fro

Shared hosting isn't as bad as people make it out to be — very few people use many resources, so your site could have had a massive share of a 8-core box or something. Still don't like it though, but my main requirement is root access. :)

Kinda, but really the logo at the top left of a page (generally) is the branding of a site. Plus to an unsuspecting user, it seems like the site is endorsing Digg. At first I didn't mind the digg bar, but since working on a project which so

Facebook, Yahoo, Flickr and Digg all use non-PHP solutions for the back end. Rails can scale fine once you realize it's not magic; you take a hit from using a framework designed to make developers happy, not servers, but you can work around

http://www.spotify.com/en/ Since using that, iTunes: "Last opened: Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:27" It just feels like I'm browsing for music on iTunes, and listening to the previews....except the previews are the full songs! It rocks! :

One thing I've always wondered about MapReduce...is what it's used for? I mean what kind of data do you put in, and what do you aim to get out?

They could just have a list of off-the-shelf components which are fully compatible, pretty much like the OSX86 project has; a good hackintosh with tested components can be as good as the real thing. It wouldn't be perfect, personally I'd st

Good luck to everyone! And if you don't get in (which lets face it, many wont), don't let it put you down; remember — VCs get stuff wrong all the time, not picking you could be included in that! So go make PG regret not picking you!! :)

I'd love to see what'd happen if Apple opened OSX up to non-Apple hardware, or competed on a price level with mid-range PCs. Personally I think the biggest thing holding OSX back is the hardware price; even Microsoft know that I think…inste

I was an avid Firefox user for years, but one thing which always annoyed me is it becomes a complete resource hog. So I ended up switching to Safari upon the first beta of 4. I hated it at first, I love it now — nice and light, fast as hell

What's low-risk? Just the whole point of selling something to the end-user. There isn't much which can go wrong — you create something, people pay you for it, and you can grow (resource wise) as fast as your user base does. That's
