This topic is polarizing because it shows how Silicon Valley betrayed its original hacker mindset of openness in favor of tech feudalism. I'm pleasantly surprised to see the EU standing in this battle. This is a good thing for hackers,

The latest Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 on AMD 7840U are the closest thing you can get to a Macbook, with near-M3 performance and decent Linux support, while being much cheaper. My only regret is the soldered RAM.

I know marketing folks prefer poetic names, but I wish we had consistent naming like v1.0, 2.0 etc, instead of renaming your product line every year like Apple and Xbox does. Confusing and opaque.

"Au large" means "off the coast"/"at sea" in french. Slightly poetic and retro, and symbolizes their entrance in the big league of LLMs.

AI generated influencers are a thing, even on OF nowadays. Our last value will reside in "human authenticity", but maybe that can be faked too

Parsing markdown is multiple orders of magnitude easier than Microsoft Word, especially before docx. And it has the merit to be human-readable in plaintext!

Great cautionary tale about how quickly formats get obsolete, especially closed source ones. I use markdown, plaintext and png for all the documents I need to store long term. Even if these formats disappear, I could trivially reimplement m

Posterity only remembers the most acclaimed pieces, there are plenty of airport novels no one remembers and that have nothing to envy to modern Tiktok.

Why do we obsess so much over legacy form factors? Watching movies, listening to 2h conference talks, playing a 60h narrative videogame, and reading scientific papers in PDF may not be as noble, but they are equally meaningful to me.

And AI is only accelerating an already existing trend. Freebooting and content farms have existed for a decade now. I wish too that consumers will grow tired of low-quality stolen/generated content, but that is not the case yet. Take s

I agree Gnome could use more polish and customizability. But it is my favorite desktop by far. His opiniated design is both a blessing and a curse, but like Apple, I accept the tradeoff: the UX is too good compared to the other players. Pro

Great comparison, that's even more worrying. If we suddenly loose fossil fuels and fertilizers, the lack of agricultural skills will probably kill billions.

Now that the iPad kid generation is growing up, I fear most don't even know what a file system is. The post desktop world is real. Abstractions are comfortable, but they might reduce the number of techie teenagers like OP in the future
