Here is my favorite video about 8-bit era optimisations. Makes you appreciate games from this era even more. This arcane magic survived in the demoscene to this day. https://youtu.be/ZWQ0591PAxM?si=VsIbeLAb7mHc_I9V&t=157

2 years later, Washio shut down and sold its assets to competitor Rinse. Which is still operating today https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/06/buying-washios-assets-rins...

Frequently when I encounter a bug in a consumer web app, I de-obfuscate the JS, find the bug, and contact the support team with the reproduction steps and a suggested patch. They fix it much faster this way.

That's what I did recently. Got a cheap Xiaomi ($120 used) with a 120hz OLED display and a mid-range CPU and flashed PixelExperience on it: it feels like a $800 Pixel phone.

Interesting how sentiments gets worse over time for every topic. Could you check the overall HN sentiment over time, to see if we got more pessimistic ?

There is no silver bullet. Money works on most contexts, but sometimes reputation, social structure and idealism work too. The open-source culture and Wikipedia are great examples. Reminds me of Eric Steven Raymond's hacker howto from

Same reason why Wikipedia contributors do not want to be paid, and why cryptocurrency-based wikis failed. Money is not always the best incentive. It is leaking in every part of our society, sometimes in a destructive way. It's great fo

In most cities in the US it's already too late. Urban sprawling and single-family-zoning lack the density for any public transport. Technology won't be enough, this is a political problem.

Great example that systemic problems require systemic solutions. AC is an individual solution to global warming, and actually making things worse. And deincentivizes us from fixing the actual problem.

Your idea sounds similar to the Kardashev scale [1], and we seem to be at 0.733. The concept of the Dyson sphere emerged from that theory. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale

Exciting paper. I hope this won't be the same scenario as the other team that claimed a room-temperature superconductor in 2020 and was later proven to be a fraud. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-02401-2

This is terrible advice. I've had teammates with impressive velocity and loc/day, but code quality so low they destroyed the codebase in weeks. "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure" https:&#x

With the end of free money (higher interest rates), I wonder if bootstrapped startups could have their revenge over VC-funded ones. Nothing beats the feedback loop of profitability.

Imagine if you could plug this to your desktop dock and use it like a Mac Mini. It would be the ultimate multimodal workstation, and justify its price easily.

This is the circle of life. FAANG is the new IBM. Who will succeed them? Chinese big tech? Next gen full remote startups? Or will the public stop trusting tech entirely ?

Well the Switch has a big gimmick: it is a desktop & mobile console at the same time. It's in the name. This is why they had to compromise on GPU power and basically skip 2 generations compared to the PS5.

It is impressive that a game running on an 8-year-old phone GPU will likely be game of the year. Nintendo proved again that gameplay and art direction matter more than anything.

I agree, computers are cheapers than engineers. But I wonder how much more productive our economies could be if everyone was taught programming the same way we teach reading & writing, and open standards were ubiquitous.

Using LLMs with 100GB VRAM to convert PDFs to CSVs is truly depressing, but I am sure many companies will love it. 2023 office software already uses 1000x more ressources than 1990s'. I bet we are ready to do that again.

I have to mention the elephant in the room : many carriers push customers to replace their home wired connection with 4G/5G modems. These short term gains ruin the game for everyone. Wireless bandwidth is precious.

Quick napkin math of the wasted power : Firefox has ~300e6 users, let's assume the bug wasted 5 extra watts 4 hours a day. That's 250 megawatts saved, the equivalent of an average coal power plant. Because some Microsoft engineer
