Great lectures. He even manages to cover chaos theory. Philosophy students should look into this series for some biology orientation, in my humble opinion.

Yes, weird depends. PG's point is, again, about finding new pockets of programming, not necessarily finding the best tool -- meta or not -- for a task at hand. Fine, everything is binary code in the end; it doesn't mean there aren

Smart here is used as an indicator of a language with unique powers. So it's more about what the engineer can do to expand his own mind, to get new perspectives.

I bet that's an effective job ad. I have no idea of the significance of this news. (But I'm glad to hear Erlang is/was still in use.)

I stumbled upon this theorem after trying to come up with a mapping of color space, RGB to RGB, where each color maps to a new one. (It was for a mouse cursor effect in a painting app.) I couldn't come up with one, and indeed it is imp

SQL queries make me anxious. I don't pretend to know what optmizations the compiler does to my C++ code, or the details of the cache, but at least I have a mental model of what goes on under the hood which reflects the ballpark algorit

I can't think of any better entry to programming than making games. You get the loop, the variables, conditionals, functions, and gradual sophistication grows organically. For kids, I would look for a programming language where making

An ostrich feather duster. People ridicule it for only spreading the dust around. That's the point! It spreads to the floor where it's eventually sucked up by the vacuum cleaner.

Maybe the universe exists precisely because it's indistinguishable from its own simulation. Maybe that's existence per se. Maybe self-reference is more fundamental than void. Likelihood arguments assume some kind of bottom level,

Ideally kids can now be creative at new levels, but the cynic in me also sees children simply not coming up with their own design anymore. Anyway, while I can certainly romanticize the tedious search for pieces and perhaps getting ideas in

Fair enough. Anecdotally though I've gone to the printer's and had problems expressing the binary/1-bit color conceptualization.

With binary I meant 1-bit pixels; in mspaint.exe this is called monochrome bitmap. I find the distinction convenient because one dimensional color can be called grayscale or black and white. Maybe 1-bit could be called black or white.

GLSL is a fun environment for image analysis. You get a sense of being close to the metal as in the good old days. Horrible code to debug though. By the way. For me, monochrome == binary.

That's a bit besides OP's point though, which is about vacuous claims. Humans are the existence proof that there is some sequence of circumstances where evolution reaches GI. There's an analogous sequence of circumstances in

This reminds me of the "Based on a true story" in the Coen brothers' Fargo. Looked at as an artistic effect, these (non-)facts elevate the Spielberg movie by adding a meta twist. Makes it even better in my opinion.

Yeah, it's a Yogi-ism. It's a sign of our time though, isn't it? Expressing absolute certainty is almost sacrilegious these days. "I'm 9.99999...% sure."

They mention SIMD support, but It's unclear to me in what capacity the GPU is leveraged. The hair segmentation example on the MediaPipe webpage suggests it's evaluating the graph on the GPU though.
