Well, if the statement is "we need some eccentric thinkers" then survivors suffice. We have some eccentric thinkers. If the statement is "we need more eccentric thinkers" then I think I'm going to demand the rigor

It was a bit of a surprise they didn't already do it. Most people expect rates to go up at the next FOMC. Inflation is moving up, mostly due to the Iran War related oil crisis.

They continue to be incredibly generous. 2 vCPUs and 12 GB of RAM is extraordinary for no cost.

When Gwern needed a fellowship to come to SF he got one. When he had his “great idea” it was funded. The truly unique people out there find a way. Any government bureaucrat will just find the Jason Ardays of the world.

I’m not “only counting the first 6 years”. I’m saying you can get to 6 years on $1.2 m if you can do it at a thousandth the cost. I’m sure if you have some success by then, the $30 m over the next decade won’t be too hard. To be honest, if

Google only spent $1.1B for the first six years of Waymo. At 1/1000 the price you’re spending about $1.1M over that period or about $200k/year. That’s cheap enough that you should just do it.

For small models like this, it’s super important that it works well at tool calling etc. imho because it can’t memorize facts and isn’t big enough to tell when it doesn’t know. I could use it for high quality tool routing or a backup fast m

Beautiful tribute. Perhaps a reminder to self to write my own version prior to our passing. Such misfortune to be taken so young.

Problem is prefill on these, right? Initial prompt processing takes forever? I suppose you’re right. Cost is not a thing on its own. It’s a performance-cost frontier and one can do CPU inference in the worst case.

30 tok/s generation? Nice! What was prefill by the way? Also, these are 256 GB RAM studios? Good timing on those!

Surprisingly low hype for a company running perhaps the most advanced consumer-interactive robots. I’m quite fond of these machines and will periodically rescue them when someone has misused them (door not closed, most commonly). Hope they

I do like integrating the shell with the agent. That seems like something I do occasionally need. But the occasion when I need it is getting rarer and rarer so I suspect that this is building a feature for 6 months ago.

The anti-camera things are also somewhat effective at getting rid of London's ULEZ cameras. Quite admirable that this coalition of quite disparate interests was able to form around opposition to the specific device used to manage diffe

Haha, it's all in how you use the tool, eh? My wife actually used an early Dall E to iterate on the design for my wedding sherwani. I loved the end result too. Picture here: https://x.com/arjie/status/18553280

It seems to be quite accurate that many of these tests are publicly referenced. e.g. (PDF warning) https://www.pwc.com/m1/en/careers/documents/assessment-proce... and the provider is https://w

It's pretty neat, actually. If you use Gemini's Nano Banana with a photo reference, it's pretty good at keeping most of the things that matter. I walk down 4th Street daily and that's pretty much what it looks like near

I thought Nano Banana did a great job! I used a trick I saw someone describe elsewhere where I inserted the annotations on the photo / google street view of the scene. It seems like the model does a better job of instruction compliance

This can't have been recent. Or perhaps it was and they violated the law. A standard IQ test is probably quite good at assessing if you'll be good at a programming job but it is also quite illegal unless it has passed through a ba

Fair enough. I dislike word-expansion AI text so I get it. When I write on my blog, part of it is as memory like a diary for myself and I find that I can create these images that help remember the scene well. As much as I'd like people

All of that may be true and yet it seems overly prescriptive for a state authority to determine the name of food. After all, a cheesesteak is not a steak but a sandwich. Regional variations on names are quite reasonable. On the other hand,

I don't disagree, but at some point in the last year they ended up severely word-expanded. So in a revealed sense, they are no longer meant for human consumption except for those who don't significantly value their own time. There
