I love the swipe gestures in Lion, but find I often have to undo and redo them because I chose the wrong one. Particularly if I end up using the trackpad at an angle so a vertical (to me) swipe is more of a diagonal on the trackpad.

I've used vertical mouse (www.evoluent.com) for years now at work and it is great. It's cost per hour must be down in the 1c range. It feels much more natural on my wrist than one in the normal orientation ... and its always amusing to see

I've never looked at (or heard of) FreeFileSync ... but AeroFS offers a very simple install and clean minimal UI for setting up the syncing. I don't have to worry about which machine has which copy of which file, or even what the machine na

I've been using the beta for several months now and it has worked great across a variety of Windows and Mac machines. For things like music and photos where I have 40+GB of accumulated bits it feels a better option than a straight cloud bas

You could probably mash something up using Voxeo or even the new Twilio client stuff. I have this on my project list for some home automation ideas, but it is too far down to actually have been given any cycles.

I agree Google could easily change the API at any moment, but otherwise it seems a very grey area at best. Especially since they are including this within the open source parts of Chromium as the article implies. I wouldn't rely on this fo

I am fairly new to JS and have read a number of articles on how 'this' works over the last few months after getting suitably confused by the (apparent) 'inconsistent' behaviour. I think this is the best presentation of the concepts I've see

As a many year Windows programmer I _love_ typing on my 2011 MacBook Pro keyboard except for the cursor movement. I can't seem to train my fingers to handle the different combinations of Alt/Opt/Cmd/Ctrl/Shift and the arrow keys. The lack

Isn't DSL constrained by the distance to the CO? We live inside Ottawa's city limits (the capital for non-Canadians!) so could scarely be considered the middle of nowhere and yet don't have a hardwired broadband connection option.

I was contemplating setting up a VPS for this, but a turn key solution at $5\month would be much better. Can you comment on how you can offer 100GB\month VPN for $5 but the basic proxy plan is 2GB\month for $20? What use case does the prox

Interesting ... why would he bother writing the check after the fact? If he simply refused to pay then it would seem to remain a contract dispute. Writing the check only digs the hole deeper for no benefit whatsoever.

Go with what you are most comfortable and productive in. If you want to launch a startup then do that, and leverage all the skills you have (you'll need them). If you want to learn a new technology then go ahead and do that with some small

I'm not familiar with the details of bitcoin, but in that case aren't (some of) the inputs to the function hidden not the function itself. Proof of work techniques are relying on forcing the other party to run a known function in order to p

Interesting -- how can you verify that f() was applied when by definition you don't know what the output of f() should be? If someone was trying to be dishonest then they could fake any attribute of f() that you could likely verify.

Not exactly -- does the Federal govt even keep a balance sheet that shows assets - liabilities? How do you value the Federal assets? What's the going rate for a second hand air craft carrier?

I really have to wonder if the (original) author thought about that line when he wrote it! It is an interesting definition of 'free'. There is a reason people don't choose to put in electric heating when other options are available..

The set of people willing to pay for a paper and the set of people wanting to have _their_ paper reviewed are probably (hopefully?) disjoint. As such I'm not sure it is too useful to compare the prices.

So is the question how do these loans appear on China's central bank's balance sheet? I am confused by reading this article: if part of the issue in the US is that China holds vast amounts of US debt, and now China is also highly leveraged,

I'd like to see legislators _pension_ provisions tied to future economic metrics. Hopefully that would inspire them to take a longer term view, and they would be less able to redefine terms when they are being applied as they are no longer
