Your 16 bit app will be out of luck if you ever install a 64 bit version of windows ... though a 20 year lifespan is pretty decent.

Interesting -- I've been a happy site5 customer for years, though I've never needed much customer service. Still good to know you are looking to draw from the right pools.

I'm looking at doing something similar. I'm planning on providing beta users a significant free period beyond when I start charging, ie. a whole free year. The incremental cost is relatively small and the goodwill seems worthwhile. I don't

It would be interesting to see some data on fraud rates in different industries. It is easier to see the thief's risk/reward proposition when ordering a large screen TV with a stolen card than then signing up for a $50\month service. There

What if you break it down into $\hour. If you are reading for entertainment and a $10 book that 4 hours to read, that is only $2.50\hour. Seems like good value. If it isn't for entertainment and you aren't deriving (syay) $10\hour of value

Interesting idea. The slideshow on the front page changes too quickly once you get to the results pages. It is hard to see what is returned since it is only up there a few seconds. How about providing a text box to allow the engine to be t

In your pricing slide you have 'monthly' spelled as 'mothly' And as a minor preference thing having the slides scroll downwards looked wrong ... maybe upwards or sideways would look better.

Another common example would be airport check-in. You have economy and first-class. Often the first-class line is empty - do you let 'the rabble' check-in there and risk a first class passenger having to (gasp) wait a couple of minutes beh

I've seen the two level queue in use at some airports for security and immigration. But they do have a person splitting the head of the long queue into the short queues immediately in front of each x-ray machine/agent. It works pretty well

Be careful of the rabbit hole - once you go down there is no knowing where to stop (and no end of what it can cost!) Seriously though, it is a fun if somewhat pricey hobby to get into. There is an active community at cocoontech.com and a nu

Is this looking just through a known list of exploits for popular packages/libraries, or is it doing something find holes in my application code? I'd certainly be interested in the later, and even just hearing how you go about that.

A simple validation of ownership would be something like google uses for the google apps for domains: generate a unique id and ask them to create a file of that name on the domain. As a secondary check ask for something to be created in th

I've used it for some small scale distributed business apps. Latency isn't really a concern and the usage pretty much fits into the 'free' tier. It saves having to worry about any other infrastructure -- these are desktop apps that need to

I understand the security argument about not giving out more information than you absolutely need to. But, I hate 'low-risk' sites that do this when I'm not sure of my username/password. If I can't remember what username I used 6 months ag

I can see EC2 gets expensive for larger instances, but the micro instances make the economics more favourable. FWIW this is a low bandwidth app as well. For testing I can spin the server up and down as I need and literally pay per-hour (+ t

Maybe not, but that is still 384MB\s sustained write speed to your disk which is 22GB\minute so you'd need a 2TB disk for the average movie. Maybe in a couple of years when 2TB SSDs are cheaply available...

To be picky, my understanding is even if this worked it isn't a 'perfect' copy of the source -- you would be getting a raw uncompressed HD video stream, which is great, but would need to be recompressed to be manageable. You are not getting

You can't yet snapshot the disk images in all (most?) of the Rackspace data centers to their storage cloud. You can with the ec2 micro instances. Suppose to be coming real-soon-now though.

Agreed -- my filing system became so much easier when I realized that reads were rare. Just bucket (well, box) by a suitable parameter, typically date, and you're done.

Cool editor -- definitely consider making it licensable. A minor quibble: when I create a table it would be nice if 'tab' moved between cells as in Word/Excel rather than adding a tab within the cell.

Why not just accept the GA id in the settings page and inject the code at the right place yourselves? Though simple in-house page view stats would probably work better for 99% of your target audience than having to sign up for GA.
