In the beginning of my career I changed jobs quite often for better pay. That gave me a lot of big increases. In one of them I stayed less than 6 months.

I have close to 15y of experience now, and I've mostly only worked on healthy companies - I can think of 1 that wasn't. I have worked in ~8 companies give or take.

I interviewed a couple of folks from Google recently and it was mindblowing how they "work", it's very unfortunate. I feel for some of the people who only worked there their whole lives (e.g: from recent grad within the last

Nonsense were a lot of your replies in my experience :), this "measure everything" is very much another cargo cult. Software engineering is complex, people are complex, thinking you can come with a true metric and who doesn't

Companies can be wildly different in how they operate, how decisions are made, and what trade offs they prefer, what culture they have. Simply adoption something that worked in a previous place isn’t a way of usually making decisions, imagi

Having joined a company that uses Slack for the first time it was crazy how good it was on searching for issues that other people had. I can quite literally copy and paste the error message above and see other people that had the same issue

Maybe you're not the only expert in HN ? For someone to write what you wrote after 20y of experience is a bit interesting - and you did write a lot ! I might have more YOE than you do for example, and might have worked on bigger compan

You're conflating different things - this has nothing to do with Pet vs cattle. Even in your confusion, State still exists in the real world and needs to live somewhere, it also is unfeasible to always recreate big states.

I believe it's due to Ruby being its language of choice. Ruby is mostly a dead language in the Ops space, unlike Python. Having inherited a big mess on Puppet of some people who used the flexibility of Ruby to automate 5 datacenters,

Maybe because Python is already in use by pretty much every company that makes money in this (and others) domain ? Some of what you mention looks like pebkac problems as well.

I lived on Chilco & Nelson for many years... people simply have Starbucks cups with beer inside or other equivalent methodology of "wink wink". As long as you aren't being an ass there's zero problem..

Great question, seems a bit difficult to gather a non-biased (if that exists) opinion online - be it on reddit or hackernews. I am debating moving from another country to it to be closer to executives on my company (L1 possibly green card),

At a lot of companies I've worked at, the engineers are empowered to decide on what to work at, it's not like they're 100% booked by PMs. Even if PMs, they can argue. "Your manager tells you what to work on" isn
