The Visual Effects industry is mostly on-prems. Compute, storage, memory and bandwidth are all very expensive.

Yes, unless your SaaS deals with life and death or 99.999% uptime contract, you're pretty safe running something like Django+Redis+Postgres+NGINX in a single box for years and sleeping well... once you hit some really big number of use

I never bothered to automate anywhere I worked... it is a <1 min task done once a day, which is usually more useful if it comes with a higher level human description. The automations I've had is to link jira to gitlab or perforce ba

Really depends on how much trust and empathy there's in the team.. I say my stuff is shit all the time and am okay w/ others saying it too in the context of my team. If a random person emails me saying my code is shit -- not so we

This really feels like a workflow issue where you have to discuss with your team how to best categorize the work. I've seen below categories with state transitions work well.. * TODO * In progress * On hold * Awaiting feedback * Pendin

I had a terrible experience in Berlin where a small start up pulled a job offer from me 2 days before the start date. I had already sold all my stuff in my current country and had the first month of rent paid... At least they paid me 1/

I do not think 170k USD in SF is better than 170k CAD in VAN/TORONTO. 170k CAD in VAN/TORONTO isn't impossible to make for seniors.

Well I left the embedded industry a while ago. There was some movement towards Yocto but we used autotools for everything. I worked in the VOIP industry ~14 years ago and in the electrical sector ~8 years ago.

I really like Heroku too and I think it does solve the problem particularly well for simple web apps. The world of devops isn't entirely simple web apps. Nor does it necessarily run (or can run) in the cloud. There's an OSS heroku

What would you feel a simple solution be? Maybe you know something that others don't... or maybe it is just really hard to have a standard across millions of different ways of deploying and running software systems.

Depends what you're doing. For Python using something like virtualenv and pyenv feels like enough. For javascript based projects I also feel that nodejs contains its dependencies pretty well for local dev. Golang works well multi platf

I think stress is much more about how you perceive it than anything else ? I’ve seen people sweating over deadlines on product deliveries ... nobody cares if you miss it, no lives are lost .. but some people go absolutely insane. 99.9% of t

I think to know all of that is a bit of a stretch. This same exact list could be used for a mid or a senior level. As a junior I would expect you to be roughly aware of some of those topics. Certainly knowing AWS, SSL, JWT, firewalls, FTP

Why do you feel it’s expensive though? As a software engineer making 100k in the USA it is a couple of hours of work to pay. It will save you a lot more time than that. I’ve paid from my own pocket and used in all companies I worked for ...
