How do you learn if you don't have to maintain what you wrote after two years...? Also, creating connections and really understanding a company/business is really fun IMO.

House/condo have very different prices. You can totally buy a condo anywhere in Vancouver with a software engineer salary of 120k+ which is very doable for senior positions..

I agree with you but out of curiosity what do you suggest as a solution ? You believe all we need is the fine and then the company goes under ? If that's true then all the individuals who failed could just as easily go to another compa

The software environment was very locked for security reasons, no internet and etc. Just felt it was simpler to not use JSX and to deploy with scp ;-) In fact every dependency was manually downloaded and put on a vendored folder of the proj

Thinking that you have to Take a Side is IMO a false dichotomy. There is a whole specter of opinions. Between "I support what facebook did" and "I do not support what facebook did", or "I support Trump" vs &quo

Regardless of being the right thing to do or not, it is very interesting to see a software platform banning a president of a country. Interesting times.

The problem with .deb and .rpm is that their spec file format is horrendous. I've packaged multiple RPMs and every time I have to do it is a complete PITA, lots of quirks, macros, flags, etc. The official docs are like a deep man page

Focusing on the technical steps and what might be technically feasible or not versus the existing world and artists workflows. Also speaking as an authority that knows best patronizing who actually works in the industry.

You might be surprised about how much code underpinning our society has no tests at all, how many huge companies place no value on test coverage. And it all mostly works just fine. It might be even the right decision some times to not spend

Great article! Really enjoyed reading. It does seem that golang is well suited as a language for backend services running in an Unix environment and I think that’s an Ok trade off for a language to make. It’s okay not to excel on everything

Everywhere I worked has been traditional NFS, and I've seen more than 3 times the figure you quoted working well. Usually you have different mountpoints/vfs`s in different servers for different kinds of files.

Not Pixar specifically but Modern VFX and Animation studios usually have a bare metal render farm, they usually are pretty beefy -- think at least 24 cores / 128 GB of RAM per node. Usually in crunch time if there's not enough nod

FPGA is really expensive for the scale of a modern studio render farm, we're talking around 40~100k cores per datacenter. Because 40~100k cores isn't Google scale either it also doesn't seem to make sense to invest in custom
