So much of main line security practice is cargo cultism. There is so little use of actual research and data on how compromises actually happen. Somebody just gets the idea something is good for security and it sticks. No rationale needed.

Paid amplification isn't the fundamental problem, but it contributes. The root of all evil on the Internet in the past 10-15 years is algorithmic timelines and algorithmic content curation whose goal function is to increase engagement.

Let's say S230 was dropped. Would this really damage free speech online, or would it damage platforms and lead to a resurgence of the open web? Edit: also would it genuinely endanger end-to-end encryption or only do so in the context

If the Roman Empire had collapsed without the volcanic eruption, would it have led to anything as deep as the "dark ages" or just a political reshuffle? France has been through like four governments in the past 200 years. The US i

My pet theory on the flat Earth is that it's been pushed in order to compile lists of extremely gullible people by scraping social media so that these lists can be used later. For what? Who knows. Targets of scams, marketing, propagand

Apollo looks nothing at all like the WMD lie. There is more evidence available today that the Apollo landings happened than there was at the time, such as photos of the landing sites taken by later Lunar probes. Lies generally degrade over

I'd like to see a small lean kernel like NetBSD ported to WASM. You could run services in the browser or in a relatively safe and portable local WASM VM. Would be an interesting way to distribute certain kinds of software. Performance

I too have mused endlessly about what happened in the early 1970s. It seems like we really, really went off the rails in so many ways at that time. I love that site for its graph collection but I am not convinced of its hypothesis (nor do I

Reduced CO2 emissions? Reduced dependence on finite fossil fuel supplies? Cheaper energy in the long term once these systems are scaled up, and an end to energy price shocks caused by fossil fuel supply?

Controlling exfiltration by blocking ports. That's cute. There are SO many ways to exfiltrate data. The only way to control exfiltration with a chance of success greater than zero is to lock down all work devices (at the OS level, cent

That was what I meant, but re-reading I realize it wasn't clear in my comment whether or not I was agreeing with the parent. I meant that I'm a white male founder and have experienced maybe 5% of the crap described in the article.
