The entire mobile ecosystem is about spying, with any features these devices provide being secondary to their primary function of gathering information on their users. Of the mobile platforms, Apple seems the least like this. They seem to a

I long ago developed the opinion that most "innovations" in money and finance are scams whether intentional or not. Money and finance are like power and water. They belong to a class of things that should be unbelievably boring, t

I'd add that these successes only happen in markets that are so stagnant and moribund that they're easy to disrupt. Hotel and especially taxis strike me as those. Every trip in a regular taxi I've had in the past decade has

There is plenty of room for a sane, intelligent conservative position in our political landscape and discourse. Where is it? There are over a dozen congressional candidates today (all on the R side AFAIK) who espouse or at least dog whistle

I think part of it is the decay of discourse. People don't know how to discuss ideas in good faith. They just know how to troll, yell, make unfounded wild accusations, and meme. Basically we have a junior high level of public discourse

It's amazing to me that every CPU doesn't have specialized memory copying instructions given how common an operation this is and how it can be a bottleneck. We have hundreds of vector instructions to optimize all kinds of special

Easy: it's a bad faith argument. Most of the stories I've read about terrorists and mass shooters report that they were using bog standard instant messaging, unencrypted e-mail, and social media. Most of these people are not highl

We run Matomo (formerly Piwik), and I recommend it. It's actually better than Google Analytics in some ways, and you get your own data. This makes deeper analytics easier and also helps protect user privacy since the data is held only

I have believed this for a very long time. Both Google and Facebook are well known for hiring top talent at top dollar and then putting them on projects that are far below their ability level. It takes that talent off the market.

True, but those are trivial to port as there are already mature JDKs and JavaScript VMs for ARM64. Porting an electron app should be a matter of checking it out and building it with ARM support. Applications with internal JITs custom-built

I call this the paradox of Apple: they're the least open platform and perhaps as a result are the best for privacy, security, and user trust. Android is much more open and is a spyware free for all. The Internet is like a failed state.

The biggest advantage of RISC derived designs is easy to parse instructions. The problem with X64 is not the number of instructions, as they can be thought of as macros anyway, but all the different instruction lengths and encodings. This m
