I used to love ask.metafilter.com! I went there almost every day, up until a couple of years ago. Around then, I sort of lost interest, as most of the popular questions became 1) Can you recommend me a recipe X for Y?, 2) I hate my life,

What I mean is: who can predict the future? The 'book' had certainly impacted the structure of Human thinking, and McLuhan suggested that this resulted in things that weren't necessarily 'good' (maybe some good? som

Recently, I stopped over a friends house. And, I was surprised to see a group of 7 or so 9-11 year olds all watching their computers or devices. At first I thought they were having a lan party, playing a game. So, I asked them what they

I work in R&D for a large science services company. And, I'm often responsible to turn nifty research projects into marketable products. Because of this, I often take over a lot of code from scientists and academics. And, it

Could someone explain why Priest, in discussing the 'four corners', presents the Hasse diagram with {F} at the bottom? Why would it not be {}? I'm not too familiar with posets, but it seems the order matters, right?

I haven't read most of the books in the list, but I do have very fond memories of Rudin's "Principles of Mathematical Analysis".

I grew up in the 90s and can affirm that violence was substantially higher than now. It was common to get into 'street fights' just for something to do. But, I'm also curious whether there were higher death rates for the po

Higher population density seems obvious. Increasing density increases the opportunities for violence. But, since violence is more often directed at people that are known, rather than strangers, I find the other two suspect.

"Many students struggle with the idea of recursion..." I still remember one of the worst bugs I'd ever introduced (in terms of pain to me). I was maybe 2-3 years out of my bachelors, and I thought recursion was so nifty that

When I retire at 45, I plan to work as a bagger at a whole foods, just for something interesting to do. I got the idea from a bagger I met at my local whole foods. He was previously a developer and made a ton of money and retired early. S

What is a case in which you'd want pass by value in a queue? I mean sometimes you're forced to pass by value, but if you have the option of pass by reference, why would you choose by value? Maybe I've been doing this stuff t

It's great that you believe that you have succeeded in your approach. However, it's dangerous to hold your anecdote up as a recipe for success, more broadly. The 'tough it out' strategy is common, and it's forced

I agree with you, in ways, but I think that software pay and legal pay aren't quite the same. Traditionally, in the US, the law professions have restricted the entry of new lawyers into the market. This has artificially inflated price
