The same design pressure (to make the simple stuff easier) is at work in both cases. Much like, say, Bottle and Flask looking very similar. The "basically unusable" is probably a little harsh, but I've never really understood the motivation

I really don't understand the "lack of flexibility" thing myself. I've made Django and Django's ORM and admin do all sorts of weird stuff, and it's much easier to build on top of that than to reroll everything, which is what you have to do

Sure, but good to repeat it in this case - Python's urllib/urllib2/etc. libraries are famously hard(er than necessary) to use.

urllib is in Python's standard library: import urllib the_page = urllib.urlopen("http://www.gun.io/") print ''.join( the_page.readlines() ) I could jam it all into one line, but in Python we prefer readable code ;) ;) The Pytho

The issue that I have with that attitude (as an experienced Python and Django developer) is that there's a lot more to it than just "swapping out Django's DB and replacing it with SQLAlchemy". You miss out on most of the infrastructure arou

I'm pretty sure he means that there's no database support built in, ie. you need to go download something like SQLAlchemy, SQLObject, Storm, etc. If you're already going to do that anyway it's not so much of an issue, but for people who are

The crux of the issue as far as I see it is that Facebook aren't exactly being open and transparent about the data that they're holding on you, or how it's being used. If you don't know that, there's no tradeoff being made. And in a lot of

I can just scan the numbers and see the patterns. Column A has much more extreme ranges, lots of 40s and 70s, whereas B is much narrower. So D and E are temperature, and C and F are weights.

The metrics involved here are specifically OO metrics - inheritance depth, number of children and so on, but there's at least one, Weighted Method Count, which uses cyclomatic complexity as a weighting factor. It's described on page 7 of th

There are all sorts of possibilities - in the past I've had trouble with motivation when my employer has insisted on doing things in a stupid way for no reason, or when their development methodology boils down to "I don't know what I want..

I do a similar thing in bash for more normal development - basically a script to run my unit tests, look for OK/Error in the output and print either a couple of bars in green or the error output in red. It runs over and over again in a sepa

Why the downvote? It is bullshit. This is the first stage in making yourself an obsolete COBOL developer - just say "I don't have time to keep up with the latest technologies." and twiddle your thumbs for 5 years. Lots of knee-jerk defens

The attrition rate isn't the worst part. The worst part is what's known as the "Dead Sea effect" - all of the people who can leave, do . They're usually the better ones, at which point you're left with all the clueless or unskilled peopl

Do you even really need S3 if you're just serving up static pages? A $5/mo web host or a VPS slice would probably be overkill - you're not hitting a database at all.

The way to do that in real life is to have a stack of cards with the same distribution as the dice, ie. 2 3 3 4 4 4 ... Shuffle, turn face down and turn the top one over instead of rolling the die.
