This reminds me of the Monsanto case, where they sued a farmer (and won) for using patented seeds that the farmer obtained from a local grain elevator which happened to contain some of Monsanto's seeds. Should it eventually happen for

I used a rendering library like Phlex back in 2010. I hated it back then and I still don’t like it. They claim it’s faster than ERB but only show micro benchmarks. This is basically a form of lying. This approach stinks for a lot of reasons

We have plenty of controls on money movements. Immigrants who are financially self-sufficient can come here to visit quite easily and freely. They just can't take up jobs. We even let them buy up land, which many countries disallow.

I keep misreading this company as ClickHole and expecting some sort of satirical content.

This is an issue for all the low/no code tools. Every meaningful problem has a first class SaaS product that solves it well. Notion/Retool/Airtable/Coda/Etc are fighting over a cursed long tail and their employees a

Notions kinda funny. It has this stickiness among a college aged, tech savvy demographic that’s not generating any revenue for them but has garnered a massive valuation relative to their revenue. They want business from me, a tech savvy tec

I didn’t get the Covid vaccine because of all the medical research fraud I’ve witnessed as a grad student. Remember things like this the next time you try to mandate injections with no long term research.

"Once in a blue moon" -- you mean the thing that constantly happens? If you're not using logs, you're not practicing engineering. Metrics can't really diagnose problems. It's also a lot easier to inspect a log

I like how there's a persistent effort to make excuses on behalf of african americans. They're not being held back by history, they're being held back by chronically low expectations. Pluck an average, random nobody from the

Classic crime reporting pet peeve: Market & Powell is right in front of the Westfield. Obviously there's more property crime there. When Police would over rely on heatmaps for their patrol routes, they always ended up spending too

Self driving cars are the future. They enhance pedestrian and biker safety. It's the human driven cars that are unsafe. Allow Waymo on all of Market St. and you'll see it coexists wonderfully.

It was a failure because it wasn’t enforced uniformly, not because it existed. We need a new War on Drugs, but crack and cocaine should have equivalent (harsh) penalties.

Hard disagree. Decriminalizing drugs has skyrocketed schizophrenia and homelessness. Drugs should only be legalized in specific, medically necessary situations. Recreational use should be stigmatized and dealers should be handled as Duterte

Fair, removed that part -- I remember something about Shadow DOM got delayed or had a lot of push back, back in the day -- and I thought it was dead in the water when I started seeing Shady DOM stuff internally. But regardless, I've ne

If only Google were as committed to its products as they are to the insanely over engineered proposals that fail to solve any legitimately useful use cases. Half of why these projects exist is for internal gate keepers at Google to make exc

Religious exemptions are a good thing and should be respected. It’s important to be skeptical of novel religious claims, as they're usually just a cynical abuse of a legal exemption. Exemptions should certainly not be limitless: Americ

I worked with Bram at Google. He was an incredibly nice guy. He went out of his way to meet with me on a few different occasions. I wasn’t important at the time—I just made a few UI widgets for Google Calendar, which was his team at Google.

Literally the meme of a giant stack of evidence vs. the one study that confirms your bias. Masks don’t stop respiratory illness. It was established fact before it became a political wedge issue.

How does that work? Doesn’t it need reinforcement with signals for what aliens look like? Isn’t it just anomaly detection without that?

It’s been 5 years since I left my Dart team at Google. Still shocks me how slowly that world moves. There’s just no sense of urgency when AdWords revenue showers you with unlimited sums of money.
