Death counts don’t tell you much. If the main effect of the virus is ultimately to advance a bunch of older people’s deaths by a year or two, then it’s not a big deal. People live and people die, that’s life.

Making people think they are safe is not sufficient reason to force everyone to wear a mask. It’s only justified if we have good reason to think they work.

It became a point of civic religion to believe that the virus was catastrophically dangerous. Disagreement was not just mistaken but evil .

People aren’t psychologically equipped to handle this kind of dishonesty. We evolved to deal with small groups. People would either be forced into honesty by socialization or reputational fears, or they’d be exiled or executed. Now, you jus

Thatcher wasn’t perfect, but England was an economic basket case before her premiership. Visceral Thatcher hate is a meme for nonthinking people. The great irony is that one of the most significant effects of the EU has been to replicate ma

This is meme security advice. Anti-systemd, anti-glibc, anti-openssl. This is security by internet fad. As for the rest of the advice, it doesn't explain any of the tradeoffs, making it worthless. The kernel devs and distribution maint

Scoop tries to swim upstream and change the default install location. In my experience, this ultimately leads to problems and system fragility. Sure, it should work, but that's no comfort when it doesn't work right when you ne

Wow! Thank you. I don't think I can justify the purchase, already having bought a fairly small third-party dock and power adapter, but hopefully someone else sees this. The Genki is the obvious choice, assuming it works correctly.

The Switch is great but you have to get a third-party dock and AC adapter for optimal portability[1]. I'm kind of perplexed by the bad design of the official dock. [1] There were some issues with unofficial docks/adapters bricking

If you’re criticizing goto in kernel source, you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s incredible how many people just regurgitate this anti-goto meme without any experience writing system C code. There are various highly structured us

Plenty of young adult books, which is what Harry Potter was, especially after the first book, engage with difficult moral situations. Harry Potter instead tells you that you can have your cake and eat it too.

My biggest frustration with Harry Potter is that Harry never has to actually make tough decisions. All moral dilemmas are resolved by a deus ex. He never even has to murder the villain, just deflects his spell back at him. My eyes rolled st

The places with the strictest mask orders are having surges in cases just the same. E.g. California hospitalizations per capita are now far outpacing Florida. Masks work, kind of, I’m sure, under very particular conditions. But the net effe

Maybe I care more about not being mugged than doing racial justice in where I choose to walk. Certain neighborhoods being crime-infested hellholes is not my problem.

Doubtful. The victors write the history. The Church of “If It Saves Even One Life” and “Anti-Lockdown and Anti-Maskers are Murderers” are clearly the victors in this timeline. Your children and grandchildren will be taught about the backwar

Scientific consensus is often wrong. Science advances one funeral at a time. Most “scientists” are conformists looking for their next grant. Outside of the tenured professor elite, most of them are looking for the next job. And the tenured

The government cannot keep civilly forfeited assets unless it wins a civil case in court, the same process by which anyone can sue and take everything to your name if they win. It also has a long pedigree, being in continuous use before, du
