It's disturbing that Blizzard will hand over a thick folder of personal information like candy on Halloween, even to (out of jurisdiction) law officers. But there's nothing very Azeroth-specific going on there -- your cellular provider cou

Neat tips. I especially like the idea of joining Turk-worker communities and asking what they prefer. Good customer service to your employees, too ;-) Solid numbers for times and prices are also welcome. And "ask open-ended questions" sou

What Jeff Vogel says (in the comments, I think) to this point is that there are harder difficulty levels if you want to do this. His games do tend to have them. Another commenter replies that the difficulty levels should probably be better

It's not Rails-specific that you need to protect your models with reasonable security logic. This particular flavor of "oops, not protected by default" is Rails-specific. And Rails is highlighting the fact that "allowed by default" is conv

I haven't used it, but a quick Google search turns up this plugin, to require whitelisting mass-assignable attributes: http://github.com/ryanb/trusted-params That should fix this problem for apps that use the plugin.

This is an excellent summary on this topic. It's also big and imposing :-) Probably the best thing I got from it was the summary of how different sites (Posterous, Tumblr, et al) keep a "conversation" going about how far you are through th

Any form of sleep/anaesthesia has a nonzero chance of killing somebody. I don't even want to think what the insurance and liability issues would look like for this. You can say, "well, only if there's a hijacking" and I'll say, "but how

This does a fine job of address Jeff Atwood's criticisms of Markdown. Yay for GitHub stepping up where Markdown's author isn't. This also vindicates the "OSS authors don't owe nobody nothing!" crowd, as GitHub steps up and fixes the proble

Something that often helps me: split into smaller tasks, but also prioritize. What is the most important thing I could do to get my work a step forward? And by "forward" I mean "more usable" or "more releasable" rather than "cooler". T

An old trick from shareware folks: pick features they won't want to use immediately, like going beyond a certain size/number of projects. That way you're only targeting people who already know your service is valuable to them (or isn't).

"Not trusting Google" seems to be a theme on the internet lately. Presumably Google, being no fools, will pick up on that and understand that it's a problem, both for advertisers and developers. It's just a question of how long it takes the

It's harder for your debug environment to take apart and show the details of every object down to the OS/hardware level if you've got security to prevent it, and harder yet if it doesn't have a very good idea of the specifics of the binar
