Developers build cities. Developers maximize profit. In the USA, the gov't defines where incentives are. That is why we have urban sprawl everywhere (including the bay area). I always thought this project, S. Lake Union (Amazon), Toron

Barcelona's are shorter, include a variety of buildings per block, and are generally ringed by retail. Example: http://www.densityatlas.org/user-images/139-1.jpg Le Corbusier was building single taller buildings,

This is cool tech, but more cars/miles travelled is bad, not good. We would be healthier, happier, less harmful to environment, richer, have more friends, be better connected to our communities, etc. if we built mobility around walking

Building roads/auto-dependence will exacerbate said nightmare: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand It's time for a serious change to building around transit, walking, and biking.

Lots of our streetcar suburbs ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcar_suburb ) are walkable and low density. A key aspect of auto-dependence/sprawl is separation of uses (think big box commercial w/large park

The thing is - 100% tax on cars is libertarian. You charge car owners something closer to the costs they cause to society. Compare that to the USA where we heavily subsidize car ownership.

They're not excessive - they're more in line with true cost of car dependent society. In the US we shower subsidies on car owners. Some examples: using general fund money to build highways, charging low gas taxes that don't c

It's more what the gov't is subsidizing than what people enjoy. EG in the US it's easy to get a loan for a new single family detached house, gas taxes are low, lots of "general fund" money goes towards building high

Yeah there are tons of 100-500 acre subdivision projects - surprising none of them are for this type of city. It would be like a new age streetcar suburb.

Both points definitely true. I guess my argument is you can accomplish the same (probably more?) massive increase in quality of life without the suburban auto dependent monoculture. Look at quality of life (especially with regard to ease of

Maybe from cars hitting people - but how about death from obesity and environmental degradation of suburban auto-oriented lifestyle as compared to urban walkable/transit oriented lifestyle.
