Many/most of the comments here reflect a general mistrust towards the administration, questioning motives or competence. I've been the parent of a troubled kid. In that time, I worked closely with our school administration, who could not h

Lots of generalizations there. Change '50 year old' to 'woman' and the thought-police will have your scalp. :-) Yes of course there are lots of clock-punchers out there. We used to call that mentality 'terminate and stay resident'. (may

I'm not buying it. I'm about to turn 50 - doing better work than ever and more in demand. The tools today are so good compared to 5-10 years ago. Now I have these awesome tools, and understand sales/marketing/management/finance. ps - cou

Most new companies fail, but not all. Apple and Google were founded by twenty-somethings, and in the early days, nobody was certain what they would become. The key is to keep trying stuff, even ideas that might seem unusual. One group tha

To me Dart looks like another brick in Google's walled garden. Weakening support for XMPP, Webkit, RSS, and JavaScript. Investment in so-called open technologies like NaCL and DART that are controlled by Google and optimized for Google's

With CoVim, do all the co-editors see the same screen, or can they view different buffers?

At one time I was looking at NaCL as a possible solution for lightweight server-side sandboxing.

I'm an old person. It is quite impossible for me to get a job as a developer, or anything else really. And - I don't care. I focus on doing excellent work, not on grievances, whining, or complaining. The world is enormous, and there is u

Yet another article on Gender politics. Where is the advocacy for black/hispanic/old programmers? Having said that, I wish there were less politics on HN. I read "Hacker News" for technology and startups, not social engineering.

I don't see the need for NaCL when there is asm.js and emscripten. For fast lightweight native sandboxing, now we have docker. NaCL seemed like a great idea, but now it has been overtaken by other initiatives.

'Are you sponsored by Google?' I think so. I've been accused of being an 'anti-google astroturfer' before. 'Gosh that's odd', I thought. Then I read the posts written by my accuser. Pro-google, down the line - echoing PR talking points

I can't imaging trusting a 3rd party to provision userId's and SSH keys for my servers. Am I missing something here?

Is there any way for a Vim session to span multiple monitors? Multiple terminals? That is what I would like more than anything.

+1 for BeagleBone Black - what a great device. Beware: running 'opkg update ; opkg upgrade' broke my system. (disk out of space) Recovered by reloading the OS.

In the early days of the telephone, there was some debate about the proper way to start and terminate a discussion. Many were fond of starting a discussion with 'ahoy', ending with 'that is all'. Alas, 'hello' and 'goodbye' won the competi

The dependency thing is a big deal. So much wasted time tracking down dependencies for my Ruby projects... I recently discovered RVM autolibs. Wow - what a great idea. Is there a way to make 'autolibs' work with bundler, or rbenv?

Well, I use Debian for development and production, and I would never use Debian ruby packages on production. With the Debian packages, you have no idea what version you're getting. And then gem installs can only be done by the root user
